1964 Nickel

I just bought a pop 5/0 ms66, and it is pop 3/0 in ms66FS. I only paid $84. Is that a good deal? I don't know much about nickels as I've just started trying to buy some of the tougher dates to have someday when I actually want to work on the set.

BTW have you guys all heard the rumors about 1964 nickels?
1) The mint is still making them because they don't know how to turn off the machine (but they did slow it down a lot).
2) Some butterfly in Africa disguises itself as a 1964 nickel.
3) In some cultures a 1964 nickel is a sign of good luck, in others it's a sign of bad luck or even death.
4) A whole bunch of 1964 nickels were blasted into space never to return.
and a whole bunch of others I can't recall at the moment. These were in the first issue of the Numismatist that I recieved when I was a kid, November 1989.

    Hello haletj!

I also have one of the five MS66 coins. I paid $43 for mine, but that was 10 months ago and Jefferson prices have really gone up since then.

In my opinion, we should both feel extremely good about our purchases... one of the three MS66FS coins sold in the Heritage FUN auction in January and brought $4,715. image
    When in doubt, don't.
  • That price seems reasonable. In Jan 2002, I paid $50 for a pop 7/0 MS66 64-D nickel
from a board member. Now, two years later, the pop is still only 8/0!

I have a 65FS nickel in my 64-P slot that I don't imagine will be upgraded anytime soon
unless I can make one myself!

  • haletj.....good job on the nickel. If it's the one just bought on e-bay you might want to take another look. It is not a full stepper. Still a nice grade and pop number.

Edited: sorry....you're right....I need to slow down when I read. Again Congratulations. To bad the registry gives these hard to find grades such a low weight. MS66 in the 50's and 60's are much harder to get than '39-d's. '39-d's are a dime a dozen. I hope the new no step registry takes over in the Jeffersons and I would like to see no weights......

    Say Solid:

If you ever run across one of those other non-FS 1964-Ds in MS66 please let me know... I still have just an MS65 in my set! Of course, MS65 is all I still have for 1961-D, 1962-D and 1963-D.

I think I'm starting to notice a pattern here! image
    When in doubt, don't.
  • DennisH....That '42 d/d in your varieties set looks sweet. A very tough coin but OUCH on the registry points. I think you have a bench mark set if the non FS registry takes hold.

Wow! Yeesh. I don't care about FS at all. I just want gem coins with flashy luster, and an overall good strike (esp the detail in Jefferson's hair. Yes it was the one on ebay I just bought. I'm just slightly worried about the ticks on his cheek. That okay for ms66?

In gem it is obvious 39-d,39-d,42-d are not the key dates, but some of the fiftees and early (or even mid) sixtees! Someday this will be realized.

    GQ:

I hear you on the Registry points, but with a total pop of basically nothing I figured it was better to have an example instead of a hole in the set. Besides, how many folks can say they have a PCGS-certified Jefferson in XF40?

My real challenges at the moment are to find a 46-D/D and a 55-D/S. I have a raw BU 55-D/S ready for PCGS that I bought from a longtime Jeff specialist, but I'll be darned if I can see the OMM. I hope PCGS does.

In the non-variety category my set has a grade-only average score of 66.14 (actual, not weighted). The #1 set is 66.34. Full Steps or not, high grade Jeffs are not real easy to find!
    When in doubt, don't.
  • DennisH....I agree. That '42 d/d would look good in my set! I would grade and register any '42 d/d with nice eye appeal...gotta have the coin to finish the set.

hatetj....IMHO....some of the marks might be metal flow from the dies on the cheek. Very common on Jeffersons. I know how proud I am and all of us are of our coins but since you asked.....again IMHO....It is very flat. Maybe a 65 but a 64 for sure. But hey....it's a scan and the label says MS66.

I would love to buy an ms65 62-d, anyone have an extra? image How about 58,and 65 to 70-s (except 68-d which I have a gorgeous raw one of, and I have a gorgeous raw 64-d!).

What exactly do you mean by flat?
  • hatetj....I took a closer look and those seem to be two ticks on the check. Not bad. Ticks on the collar and shoulder are killers at PCGS. The hair lines are defined but not sharp and the hair above the ear is flat. Alittle spotty too. But....please realize I am not slamming your coin. This is all common on mid date '50's and '60's Jeffersons. Of all the '64-d's in the world I would say you have quite a "GEM". Again good luck on the new purchase....I would be quite excited if it was mine!

I better drive this baby down to the coin shop and look for some more Nickels.....

I made the 8th 64-D in MS66 in October of last year. I pulled it from a roll that I've had for over 20 years. There's another that I think will also go 66, and I may send that in with my next submission. I apologize for the picture; it's not my best effort, but it gives a good idea of what the coin looks like. The luster is incredible, but the strike could be stronger.

I'm glad to see this thread, because I don't follow the Jefferson market very closely, and had no idea what a '64-D in 66 was worth.

If you ever want to find new and loving homes for those 1964-Ds in MS66, you don't have to look any further than right here on the boards!

    Dennis,

I'll hang on to this one, but if the other comes back as a 66, I'll offer it here.

Thanks GQ! No problem. No, I just registered my 3 pcgs nickels in the 1938-2004 set. It's titled Jefferson Nickels (someone else has the title Jefferson Nickels in the 38-64 set. ) I should get a bunch more including a 63-d in the mail this week. BTW I like your set a lot!

That's a nice 64-d. I don't have mine with me, but I'll have to check it out again. I just have ms65++ for it written in my notebook (same with 68-d). All my others in my raw set from 1956-1971 I have in ms63/64.
