OK, I admit my utter ignorance in this matter, but isn't this a bit high for this coin?

Not necessarily. While I am not looking at Krause, I can tell you that those "cross type" pieces are tougher than the Pillar type, which are tougher than the portrait type. Unless I am mistaken, that is also a homeland type rather than a colonial issue.

Maybe the price IS high- I'll have to look it up- but it did not give me immediate sticker shock.

1724-J catalogs $70 in VF. If I am looking at the right variety. (KM329)

Fine is $40 and EF is $120. I would grade that coin a lower-end to typical VF, personally.

PS- it was indeed from homeland Spain and not a colonial issue.

KM 329 XF $120 VF 70 in my ancient Krause (1st ed). So, no. Not overpriced IMO.

I would go with your grading, Ajaan. I'd like to see how much it hammers for, because I've got one exactly like that dated 1623 I think, in Jester's Challenge #42 (I just checked it but for some reason the CU server has ditched the pix), and I think I paid about $50 for it. So it's nice to see a doubling of value.
