What is a Canadian "Obverse" quarter

Excuse me if I'm not asking correctly, I'm not sure of the terminology of most of the Darkside yet.
When browsing through lots of older Canadian quarters, sometimes people refer to a coin as an "obverse." What does that mean? It's not the same design on both sides, is it?
Thanks.
