These are easiest to spot if you have both examples or a picture. The type I is the older style mint mark and is often "filled". The type II is a newer type which is often clear. Un- fortunately they can't be told apart consistently except by recognizing the different styles. The type I has the upper serif close to the curve of the "S" while the type II this serif is away from the curve. There are other little differences too.
