Market share on Ebay...

According to a well known anti-PSA dealer GAI and SGC continue to gain a strong presence at shows accross the country. So I took a look at ebay and here are the numbers. I'm going to track the #s every Sunday morning for the next couple months.

To spare the usual suspects from posting their standard response to this type of factual data :

Non-PSA graded card collectors LOVE their non-PSA graded slabs SOOOOO much,
that they can't even stand the THOUGHT of parting with them. Hence : hardly any are ever up for auction ...

Are the numbers for baseball only?

No, it includes all cards under the "Sports" sub-category "cards". I typed in for example 195* psa, or just PSA for the "all" figure.

The BVG/BGS #s are very misleading in the "all" total because of BCCG and BVG/BGS cross spamming.

SCD closed their grading operation last month (told to me by Mike Baker).

I've made similar posts in the past. The numbers were just the same then. PSA by 20-1 over GAI and SGC.

Always looking for 1957 Topps BB in PSA 9!
  • Judging from this data, its a little suprising that GAI almost has as much market share as SGC (considering SGC's big head start).

Besides the Star Company basketball niche, SCD had a hard time gaining ground. Besides leveraging their brand, I wasn't sure what else they brought to the table.

69% market share for PSA. Upwards of 88% market share pre 1980. Of course, we can't forget about those lovely PRO Gem Mint 10 Mantle rookies! You know, the ones with razor sharp corners, blazing gloss, and oh....about a 1/4" too short. And the other dozen+ grading companies out there, hanging on the periphery.

    Still, they are interesting numbers.
  • Though I agree that by and large, the whole GAI/market share hysteria is mre Chicken Little than fact, let's remember that GAI's only a two year entity, not 15 like PSA or whatever they are.

    PSA 69.4%

    Beckett 22.3%

    SGC 4.3%

    GAI 3.4%

    SCD 0.6%

These numbers are very interesting. We always talk about SGC or GAI being PSA's main competitors. This is hardly the case as SGC and GAI have only a very very small fraction of market share.

The most surprising number is the market share that Beckett has gained in such a short time. We all laugh at Beckett (ie sheet cut cards, trimmed cards, no kowledge of vintage, etc.) but it appears that they are killing the competition. At least judging by the ebay numbers, there are five times as many BGS/BVG cards than SGC cards on ebay and there are seven times as many BGS/BVG cards than GAI cards on ebay.

I trust the overwhelming majority of the cards graded by Beckett are modern cards. (BGS actually beats PSA by a slim margin for the post-2000 numbers.) This really goes to show that if a grading company is to earn market-share or keep the market-share it already has, it would be foolish to simply focus on vintage card collectors.

Not that it matters to 99.4 percent of collectors out there, but I called SCD and they are still in business.

to get rid of the ones with psa "spam" in the title, simple do a search for bgs -psa. that will illiminate all auction titles with psa in them.

Here are the numbers i get. I only used the # in category trading cards.

    PSA-----18342
BGS or BVG (minus psa) 5476
    SGC (minus psa) 970
    PRO (minus psa) 1600

  • I am sending 25 SGC 1972 Topps Football to PSA to cross over. They were all purchased on ebay at bargain basement prices compared to what I would have paid for PSA's of the same grade. I have had really good luck getting equal or better grades back from PSA.
Looking for 1971 Topps Football PSA 8 NQ or above, and slowly working my way into the 1962 Topps Football Set. Check out my 1972 Topps Football Set 100% Complete.
