No one is collecting late date Braided Head cents

Just curious as to why all the copper guys on the forum haven't warmed up to this wide open Registry series? Late date Braided Head Registry Set

There are only 19 coins in this short set and they are pretty obtainable in MS and even RD. Surely this mostly dead series hasn't been bid up like Lincolns.

Also I wonder why PCGS has this short set, yet the IHC and Lincoln guys have to wait?

Edited to add: I shouldn't say no one. That one set may be Keyrock's.

The braided hair large cents have never really been popular. They are to cents what barbers are to dimes, quarters and half dollars. My own observation is that the braided hair dates from 1839 to 1845 are actually somewaht underrated. The 1846-1850 and 1857 are just about right, and the 1851-56 are all overpriced at current levels. I don't see any reason why their popularity will increase.

I'm there (The R.S.Gore Collection). The late date coppers never had alot of respect. Most old coppers focused on the early stuff. Also with the large coppers there is a different philisophy regarding EAC standards vs PCGS standards so there is a resistance to slabbing from alot of the old time collectors. A EAC 58 coin coild end up in a PCGS or NGC holder as a 64. The EAC did a evaluation several months ago and NGC was typically a few points higher, while PCGS was higher by a point or two to the EAC Grade.

I like them, and think they are good value, but acquiring a full set is not really an interest to me. I suspect most see these as type pieces. The really committed early copper guys probably go for varieties, and probably in lower grades.

As type pieces I think the later date RED's are underrated. But they may always be. Personally I think they are impressive artifacts that everyone is mesmerized by when they see one. I always have been. There aren't enough nice ones to go around either. There in contrast, plenty of red Lincolns and Indians to keep everyone happy.
