Fake or Real Morgan? - Rotated Reverse

Well I took a shot at this one. $10 big bucks.... Could turn a little profit if it's real. If not it might be a conversation peice.
Any opinions.
Thanks Tom

Rotated reverses are documented as VAM Morgan Dollar varieties. I've got an 1878-CC with a 70 degree counterclockwise rotated reverse... They are usually more valuable the closer they are to being rotated 180 degrees.

From your photo, yours appears to be rotated about 30 degrees CCW.

    What the heck is that?

I was thinking the rotation is more than that. Looking at the one staple at the bottom of the obverse, it looks like he just flipped the coin over(side flip) to take the reverse pic. So the head of the Eagle should be pointing down. So I was thinking close to 180.

I also has a rotated 78cc Morgan that I just soldText and I was surprised on how much it brought. That was why I took a shot at this one.

Looks like close to 180 rotation!! GREAT FIND!!!!!!!! image
  • If you bought that off ebay it is most likely fake, there are a few of them going around and appear to be cast fakes. The picture is to small small to tell for sure, I had a guy asking me about one last year and from the close up photos he sent me it appeared to be a cast fake but I never actually seen it in person. It was also rotated about 160° like yours is, I have never seen or heard of a real Morgan of that date with major die rotation.

It sure looks near 160 degree rotation

whether it is real or not is something you can not tell from the photo you provided

if it is cast, you will be able to tell by looking at the edge rather easily

if you give us a larger and in focus shot, we will be able to tell you
