1944-D Walkers with designer's initials hand-engraved on the die

Coin World reports a second example has been located. The coins have fairly crude designer's initials on the die, and they concluded that the initials were hand-engraved back on to the die after they were accidentally erased by die polishing.

One example sold at the Heritage Bullet auction on Feb. 2. It was in an ANACS 65 holder and sold for $690..

Might be worth checking any 1944-D Walkers you have. I think it's pretty cool to have something hand-engraved on a die, and it seems likely it was one of those things done because of the war. Maybe they didn't want to waste a die.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Interesting... there are some other Walkers such as the 1918-D that have no initials. I believe there are others as well.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
