For a typical Heritage auction, what percentage of the purchases do you think are by participants of this forum? Please share any opinion you have on the subject.

If you don't mind a complete SWAG, I'll say 3%.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Don't know bout the overall, but I'd say my bids make up for 99.999% of the losing masses.

I have pretty much abandoned the live auctions unless I can attend in person. Since I can rarely attend in person that means I buy virtually nothing from the auction houses such as Heritage.

Prometheus, your reply, coupled with your icon, has me ROFL.

I pose this question because it seems so many primo coins get sold at auction and don't show up on the registry system over here or across the street. It makes me wonder who is buying all of these coins? From what I can tell, they are people in the know, because I do a lot of research on coins I bid on, and I often end up second.
