Scan I do better?

I recently aquired a 1904 V that I'd like some opinions on. However, because the darn thing is so darkened, everytime I try to scan it, it turns out so bloody dark that you can barely tell it's a coin at all. It appears to have some decent detail, but I'm unsure at this point.
Should I accetone it (i'm affraid of ruining it)? I truley don't know what's right/wrong, but I've always heard that cleaning is a no-no.
I don't have a decent digital camera (seriously considering one), but wondered if anyone here has ever had the same delima, and how did you overcome it?

Maybe it's just not meant to be,.. or I should buy a REAL digital camera.
the 'bad' part about cleaning is scrubbing causing scratches
You need to figure out how to run your scanner - color image, crop, etc..
try a different color background - I have used craft envelopes as a backdrop with a scanner with some success
increase the DPI on scan if you can
edit out extra junk (crop)
you may be able to lighten up picture in scanning software
copper cents are difficult as well - even with a camera
