Krause 18th century world coin catalog owners, please let me know the answer to this question. When Peter the Great initiated his reforms to Westernize his country, what denominations were introduced in Russia's coniage from lowest to highest?

Thanks! In what year did this system start? What was the fineness of the silver coins?

  • No info in Krause as to when the system started.
The 18th century silver coins mostly ranged .729-.868 fineness though there were some low grade silver types as well as some with unlisted finenesses.

Reading this thread makes me realize that I know nothing about Russian history. Can someone recommend some good references?
  • O'k as I promised I'm returning with some info:

<<In what year did this system start? >>

Peter the Great did it in 1698-1704 years and the main idea was in introducing of the system of silver and cooper denominations, that was founded on decimal principle. Besides that he introduced machine mint in Russia instead of "hand" mint. And he founded also the first Russian "Munc-cabinet", because he have collected coins by himself!image

For these of you who knows how transfer Russian into English here is the detail link:

I'd heard that Russia was first to introduce the decimal system to coinage, but I never knew when or what denominations were used. Thanks for the information.

Wasn't the US second to use the decimal system?

It took me long enough to learn the Russian letters, so I don't expect to be able to understand the words any time soon.
