THOUGHTS ON 1960 TOPPS BASEBALL SET??

I'm throwing around the idea of building this set.
I love the look of it and it would be my first effort into something this old.
Is building a PSA 7 set that hard??
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

  • I did a scarcity study of 60's sets in 8 a few months ago. 1960, by far, had the most low pop commons in 8 or better. I am sure that 7 is easier but suspect that this will still be one of the most challenging sets from the 60's.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • Brian, 1960 Topps Baseball is a great set to build. a lot of the cards can be had in 7's at a fraction of the cost of an 8 especially the low pop 8 cards. card #'s 33,111,116,144,194,451, and quite a few others are very pricey in 8's but can be had for $10 range in 7's. card #451 is the lowest pop card in the set in an 8 with a pop of only 3 last time i looked at the report a couple of days ago. you probably could expect to pay upwards of $30 for it in a 7 but a lot of the other low pop 8's go considerably less in 7's. some of the higher pop 8 commons can be had for the $15 to $20 range on a consistent basis as well. i hope this answers some of you're questions. have fun building whatever grade set you decide cause that's what it's really all about. i as well have started to think about collecting this set... so far i have a spahn, mantle, mays, and koufax as well as some commons. I will be going for the set in grade 5-8...with the majority of high priced cards in the 5-6 range to be cost effective. i dont know when im goning to dive in...probably not for a while. good luck with your set !!

  • i love the 1960 set!! it is my favorite 60's set aside from the 65 set. a hybrid psa 7 -8 set is probably the way to go.very collectible in higher grades as the 7's are indeed affordable. some of the pitfalls are print marks on the "sport rookie cards" and the usual centering issues especially in the high numbered allstar cards. the star selection is strong, stan musial is included and relatively easy to find above mid- grade, mantle is featured on three cards , all affordable in high grade. i think i have a mays and aaron in psa 7 as well as a couple of other stars that i tried to crack and cross to psa 8 from SGC . drop me line if your interested and good luck you will find this set very rewarding and much easier than a 61, 62 or 63 set. i recently did the 62 set raw ,in a true exmt or better grade and it wasn't easy.
  • Good choice. This is also my favorite set of the 1960s. I am doing this set in straight PSA 8. I know it will take a long time, but I am comfortable with that and I'm ready to send off my first submission of 1960 cards ever - 21 total, all commons, all with a good shot at PSA 8 (I think?).

Highend is probably correct - do the set in a mix of PSA 7 and 8 if you are interested in saving some money and still having a high grade, nice looking set when you are finished. I just wish I could take my own advice sometimes, but I am just a glutton for punishment! image

I'm sure Phil can give you the best advice with this set, especially if you decide to go the PSA 7/8 route, which he is doing with success.

My set is currently #34. I hope to be in the top 20 by the end of the year. Check out scans of my set if you are interested.

Good to see another 1960 collector here. For some reason, the members of these message boards don't seem to be interested in this set. I counted 5 members out of the 55 registered sets - 2 of these sets are below 3% complete and one of the other sets belongs to Davalillo (of course).

  • I think I have some 1960's in 7 and maybe a few in 8. I have sold several here and there including to two of the recent posts, and they both are great to deal with. They are also knowledgable about the set itself. Take their advice and start at 7/8. You can always upgrade. Good luck, and I'll check to see what I have.
