Chain Cent Opinion

First, I want to say hello.
I've been lurking for some time, and have very much enjoyed the boards. image

I have a question on this eBay chain cent.

Real or Fake?
If real, why not slabed?

Thanks, Ralph

While this piece is probably genuine I would still want anything in this price range to be slabbed. ANACS or SEGS would be OK for this coin.

Looks real to me, if only because of the porosity of the surfaces. Why isn't it slabbed? Well, many early copper collectors are not into slabs. Besides, unless it got some lenience for its age and scarcity, it would net-grade at ANACS or bodybag at PCGS/NGC for the corrosion, probably. That's the sort of coin that is OK to collect without entombing it in plastic, although knowing for certain it is genuine is important.

It rings none of my alarm bells- looks like the real deal to me.

  • It appears I have drawn some attention to this coin. image

    The bidding went from $77 pre-posting to $1000 post-posting.

Does this mean it's real? image

    I like it.
  • It will probably sell for $3K-$4K

I've seen more porous examples than this in PCGS slabs.

I meant to add this comment previously.

Not a bad looking Chain cent IMO. Nice color, strong chain and even some of the date visible. Nice affordable example if you dont mind the porosity!
  • Thank you for all the opinions so far!

I too like the look of this coin.
My main concern was knowing for certain it was genuine, but that doesn't seem to be a concern from those who have responded.
I will certainly be keeping my eye on this one. image

Thanks again for all the comments and keep 'em coming.

It is real. And it is a S 3. NIce coin. The seller is also very good. They know their stuff.

    Ralph,

So let me get this straight. You've been a forum member since October 2002 and you've only posted 23 times? That's some SERIOUS lurking! image

Regarding the coin: It looks 100% geniune to me. If the price is right, I wouldn't hesitate to bid.

    Good luck.

A nice coin and the edge is not dinged up which is a big plus.
