Looks real to me, if only because of the porosity of the surfaces. Why isn't it slabbed? Well, many early copper collectors are not into slabs. Besides, unless it got some lenience for its age and scarcity, it would net-grade at ANACS or bodybag at PCGS/NGC for the corrosion, probably. That's the sort of coin that is OK to collect without entombing it in plastic, although knowing for certain it is genuine is important.
It rings none of my alarm bells- looks like the real deal to me.
I too like the look of this coin. My main concern was knowing for certain it was genuine, but that doesn't seem to be a concern from those who have responded. I will certainly be keeping my eye on this one.
Thanks again for all the comments and keep 'em coming.

The bidding went from $77 pre-posting to $1000 post-posting.
Does this mean it's real?

So let me get this straight. You've been a forum member since October 2002 and you've only posted 23 times? That's some SERIOUS lurking!
Regarding the coin: It looks 100% geniune to me. If the price is right, I wouldn't hesitate to bid.
Good luck.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
