Definitely the three listed above. BUT...if you're looking to submit coins yourself do some reading on this forum about the incredible "issues" that PCGS is having with it's customer base right now so that you know what you are getting yourself into image

    Trout,

When you consider the slabbing route, you ought to consider the slabbing fee and then weigh that against the value of the coin being slabbed. In many cases, it is not cost-effective to get a coin slabbed. For example, a $30 coin is considered by many not to be worth the cost ($15 for economy) and hassle (postage, etc.) of certification.

  • If you just started, slabing is ussually not the way to go... as mentioned before, it's not cost effective in many cases.

It's also a good idea to learn how to grade coins on your own. That way you don't get riped off and save a bundle not slabing common, lower grade coins.

  • As a newbie myself, ANACS would be my company of choice. They're cheaper than both PCGS and NGC, They're turnaround times are usually much quicker than either of the two on an "economy" service. They never seem to under or over grade, and their customer service is always good…10 points in my book
What kind of coins do you have and who were they graded by?

    Welcome to this great hobby!

The best services are PCGS, NGC and ANACS. You'll also see slabs from ICG and SEGS which are often considered to be a step down. Anything else will not be well-respected at all.

May I recommend a book? Pick up "Coin Collecting for Dummies" by Ron Guth. It's a great book for people who are new to coin collecting and will help you avoid wasting money.

Don't send coins in to be graded until you are quite sure that they are going to be worth it. You'll only be throwing your money away to do it now.

What kind of coins are you collecting, and what's your approximate budget? That would help us make some recommendations.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    TROUT70,

I'm going to assume you want an honest answer. If you really just wanted somebody to blow smoke and coddle you, then you're about to be disappointed. There is a 99.9% chance that your NTC, PCI and SGS coins are worthless junk. None of those three are real grading services, and the coins are all likely to be grossly overgraded. Anybody who tells you otherwise and tries to defend these garbage slabbers is probably somebody who sells them on eBay.

Your two ANACS coins are probably fine.

    are worthless junk

Not meaning to nitpick here, but I'd say that those coins are worth much less (not worthless) than you may expect. Don't discard them as valueless, for they may still be perfectly wholesome collectible numismatic objets d'art.

But, I certainly agree with the spirit of Russ' post in that the off-brand holders serve as significant warning signs!

Yeah, EVP is right. Not completely worthless. They do have some value. But, they're all common coins, the market value of which is solely dependent on condition. In those holders, the grade on the label is meaningless. I know I seem harsh, but it just flat pisses me off to see new people get taken by the slimeballs that sell this crap.

  • Good suggestion about the Coin Collecting for Dummies book, Kranky. There is a section in there about which companies are best for grading. One of the first (and most helpful) books I read when I began collecting.

Generally the off brand services get the types of coins that won't do well at the more respectable services
but people do sometimes make mistakes and send in better coins and these services do make mistakes and
give lower grades than they normally do. It's not impossible that one or more of your coins is correctly graded.
Certainly avoid these at all cost until you get more confident about your ability to grade.

Also keep in mind that some of the just missed grades can be fairly scarce and as it becomes more apparent
which ones are scarce there could be an increase in these prices. One has to believe that a coin graded by
any service as "perfect" must be at least a nicer specimen.
