What's a "Privy Mark"?

I just noticed the term "Privy Mark" on some eBay auctions for 1oz silver Maple Leafs. ie. "Titanic Privy". What does it mean? Thanks in advance for your answers!

Isn't the Privy the bathroom in England?

  • Privy marks are more of a who whereas mint marks are a where.

The privy marks usually represent the master engraver or mint master.

    Here's a definition I found:

Privy Mark - Secret mark incorporated in the design of a coin or medal to identify the minter, or even the particular die used. The term is also used more loosely to denote any small symbol or initials appearing on a coin other than a mint mark.

Hmmmm, thank you I appreciate the information.

PS I was sure I'd get a bunch of "outhouse" answers but only got one. go figure.

In the old days they had some rather severe, and gruesome, penalties for underweight/adulterated coinage. Privy marks made it easier to identify the 'gruesome-ee'.

IMO - As far as modern coins go a privy mark is only one thing......annoying!
