Morgan experts, I need your help II

Ok, Maybe I can post pics this time. I do know its a 1879-s rev 78. The Eagles chest is concave and the arrow feathers are parallel. An idea as to grade, value, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Looks MS, but I'm not 100% certain. MS63 maximum. Greysheet around 200. If it's AU58, falls to about 50.

Either way a very nice Morgan! Good score.

BattersUp: It's very difficult to evaluate the grade of your Morgan from the pix posted. If I have to make a call, I'll say that it appears that it may be an XF-AU coin that has at one time been cleaned.

I'd prefer to see a crisper focused image, with light relecting off the coin's surfaces to make a more informed judgement.

  • I can't grade the coin from those pictures either. Get something like this, and we have a chance.

I'm selling this one on ebay now, it's an AU55, worth about $40~$50.

When you get a chance, get a loupe and compare the "r" in "trust" in the motto on the reverse.

Compare the "r" to the images on this page.

~3/4 of all the 1879s Rev 1878 Morgans have the "partially broken serif in r", so those would be fairly
common. If you have a coin whose "r" is "complete", "more broken" or "completely broken", post a followup and I'll help you get it attributed. It may be worth more than the common variety.

A price guide and population trend for the varieties of 1879s Reverse of 1878 Morgans may be found here.

judging solely on the pic I'd say AU (some rub evident on Liberty's cheek and the eagle's breast/head?) , and definitely the B reverse (78). as for value, if the coin hasn't been cleaned and still displays nice luster (and isn't this Vam-34B David mentioned) then probably in the $30-$40 range as AU. Nice little boost in value if unc.
  • I concur with the above posts. She looks AU+/cleaned/net XF+. Value probably around $30-$40.
