1944 American Beauties - Girlie Pictures!!

I just finished my American Beauties set on the registry and updated all the scans last night. This set has been mentioned in several threads (which is where I learned about it) so I thought some of you might have an interest in seeing the set.

Vineyard's 1944 American Beauties

This was a fun set to put together. It's small (24 cards) and genaerally available, though condition sensitive. Mine is not the best set (it's third) but it's the only one with scans.

It took about 8 months to complete, with about half the cards purchased on ebay and the rest from raw submissions. Most of the higher grades were raw submissions.

Great job! A little risque for the 40's, I am sure that some kids loved collecting them - and with that notion, I am surprised there is not an ST qualifier on them .... kidding

  • Very cool. I was really hoping that card #23 "Thar She Blows" showed something a little different. image

  • John,
Great set and I'm sure it was fun. Glad to see you spending some money on something besides FB. I suspect that we will be seeing each other this summer on that 61 FB set though.
What I wanted to ask was "How was your ability to pick up raw non-sport". Obviously your results were good but was it a great challenge and care to share any of your sources?

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • I got lucky and found a great source for raw non sport - Gasoline Alley Antigues. They are online, but I don't have the address at the moment. I picked up 5 cards from them recently that all graded either 7 or 8. I also crossed over a few GAI slabs that I picked up cheap.

And yes, now that I've finished this I can really focus on 61 Football. I just sent in a submission that I'm hoping will close the gap a little.

  • John,
well done. i have been picking these up as well. it is a fun little set with its low pop cards and can be frustrating just like the larger sets. you have the tougher ones in a good grade.  ANKLES AWEIGH has to be the toughest card IMO. Now, with all three eights registered in sets and not much quality raw stuff to be found.

    congrats again.

    Chris
  • I love those cards! All I want is one of them. Have any dupes?
    cheers,

Those girls (if living) are now in their eighties. I assume that a set today with similar poses wouldn't fare as well.
  • I have three PSA 4s listed on ebay now.

Because of Janet Jackson's boob popping out on Feb 1st we now have six more weeks of winter.

  • Cool set!
  • Thanks for the info on the site. They have a lot of stuff but it is kind of hard to navigate through.
On the 61 FB, good luck on the submission. Some of those numbers are just plain tough. I am off work on some other hobbies and not collecting at the moment but that usually changes by the beginning of summer.
If have not updated for some time on that set but suspect that our current positions are roughly equal so it could prove to be an interesting fall. Am hoping to get that set into the "active" category this year to finish it or at least make a good run at it. Good luck on the submission. Maybe I can get to it this year and get a few more members of the "Fear the Fuzz" club (ha ha).
