On this day in.......

.....1952 George VI dies

After a long illness, King George VI of Great Britain and Northern Ireland succumbs to cancer and dies in his sleep at the royal estate at Sandringham.

The second son of King George V, he became king in 1936 after his elder brother, King Edward VIII, voluntarily abdicated the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. During World War II, George worked to keep up British morale by visiting bombed areas and touring war zones. He and his wife, Elizabeth, also remained in bomb-damaged Buckingham Palace during the war, shunning the safety of the countryside, and George made a series of important morale-boosting radio broadcasts, for which he overcame a speech impediment. The king's health deteriorated in 1949, but he continued to perform state duties until his death in 1952. He was succeeded by his first-born daughter, who was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953.

As far as I know, they were all struck as proofs. This one is a crisp strike, though. image

Gee, Wayne... thanks. You're always providing me with the perfect opportunity to horn in on your threads like some shameless SSP vulture... image

Hey, I just happened to be imaging a big long tinfoil box with coins in it (I'm imaging the coins, not the tinfoil box- the guys I met in Orlando laughed at my empty Reynolds Wrap box, but it's a perfect size for a long row of 2 X 2's). Anyway, I am preparing for my biggest eBay offering yet, and should be able to put up several dozen listings soon. I had gotten to "G", but I am still scanning Germany, so I jumped ahead in line to do some preview pics of the Great Britain stuff. And, if I get any takers while I happen to be sitting here at the computer working on scanning images, I just might... *gasp!* ... package some stuff up for same-day shipment, who knows? image

Psst! Anybody want some pennies? Just quick-n-dirty scans. The '37 is a little redder than it appears in the pic.

Oh- and there is this- I had the C's imaged, but I had to crunch the jpeg quality on this one down to upload it on this site. Three bucks, anyone? image

Of course this ain't even scratching the surface of my George VI coins. I still have some nice South African silver from the Everett Hoard left. It'll hit eBay with the rest, as soon as I get everything imaged. (The way I do things, it could be a week or two).

One more reason to stop smoking! If George VI had not been a smoker, he might have lived until the 1970s.image

His abdicated brother did, yes? Seems like Eddie the Eighth lived until 1971 or so?
