I have an 1883 Morgan that is toned on one side. It's not a very high grade coin. ~MS63
The obverse is white, except for the toning creeping just a bit from the rim. Looks like album toning.
The reverse of this coin is the attractively toned side.
Looking at it straight on, the toning appears to be brown/steel blue around the rim, turning to
light brown/no toning at the eagle's breast.
However, looking at the coin from different angles, the toning appears to be circular in shape. Rainbow colored and very attractive.
Low BW: 180K
High BW: 1 MB
The toning is natural, at least as natural as it gets. It's part of a set of 25 coins in a display case that I had purchased about two years ago. The display case was a home-made case, designed to hold 25 coins to be hung on the wall, and this coin, along with 24 of its friends sat on the wall
for ~30 years. The side of the coin that faced the glass remained largely white, but the side of the coin that faced down into the case was in contact with a felt-like cloth material that sat on top of a thin sheet of plywood. Either the felt or the plywood diffused enough chemicals over the course of 30 years to slowly tone this coin.
One of the 25 coins in this display case was an 1882 O/S Morgan that PCGS holdered as MS63, and I just sold that coin on ebay last week.
1882 O/S auction - closed. ~1 MB in pictures
So the toning is quite genuine, and if you would be interested in purchasing this coin, please send me an email. Thank you.
