I've finished a country!

imageI've had several nice surprises as I slowly catalog the bulk lots I have acquired, but this has to be, at least, near the top of the list, even if the existence of the "country" is open to doubt.

This blast-white aluminum Somaliland shilling (KM#1, the size of a U.S. quarter)
imageimage

is the imageimageimageimage coin minted for the Somaliland Republic, a breakaway from Somali whose independence is not universally recognized. It comprises the former British Somaliland Protectorate, which was joined with Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Democratic Republic.

What looks like toning is background reflections.

Not sure, but I think this came from the lot I acquired from Danglen several months ago.

Very nice Roy! Is it a tiny coin, or just my imagination?

Any idea if anybody has recognized it yet? It could boost the coin's value a little . image

Almost exactly the size of a U.S. quarter - maybe 1/4 mm larger.

Nobody, yet. The UN still clings to the fiction that Somalia is a unified country. imageimage

Do these actually circulate or was it just a fantasy like the Kurdistan coins?
  • newsmannewsman Posts: 2,658 ✭✭✭
Somaliland has a functioning government and control over some territory, so I would assume these coins do circulate.

Roy - If you want to feel that rush again there is always St. Pierre & Miquelon to collect. A grand total of 2 coins!
You can usually find the complete sets on eBay - here's an example Link I picked my set up for $3.80 several years ago. image

My favorite unique issue is the 1871 Prince Edward Island large cent. (Even though it is not be considered an independant country.)

  • I also find it very sweet to complete those short series. Bohemia & Moravia (4 coins, completed with VF-XF stuff), French Oceania (4 coins, completed in UNC) come to mind.
