Here it is the classic 1952 Topps Mantle #311

Check out the purchases of the seller, he bought a "reprint" back a while from a dude - looks like he lubed the pickup truck with it and then is trying to pawn it off as a "find"! Someone whose good at linking can have a go at this one.

I guess the Mick's borders just got washed away.

  • Check his other auctions, he is selling the reprint on another auction?

He says he is selling it after buying it to compare

With all the scan sleuths out there, I would have expected him to be exposed as a fraud by now. Maybe he DOES have the card. However, the purchase of a reprint shortly before selling the supposed real deal is enough to keep me away.

Besides, I would only buy a "PSA 1". I can't afford anything higher. Anyone have one? $1,500! (and for that price I expect a pretty ratty "1", I know!)

I don't want to think I'm jumping on this seller but I agree about the timing - also check the card purchased against the card for sale - they don't have the same border side to side; one looks 60-40, other more like 45-55. It is interesting - if this is set up to legitimize the sale in terms of purchase record vs. sales - that's pretty devious on their part!

invader73 - good job of checking out further what I found - otherwise it could have looked bad, if legit, and I made it look like they were doing something fraudulent. Should'a watched part II of Columbo!image

Hi...there is very little water stain on the back..just on the edges
also...that is just the quality of the picture...it is brown and dirty in
places with surface wear. This is not the reprint I won...I did not go
through with that because it was a reprint..you can ask the seller if you
like...I just refunded listing and final value fees as I did not want a
reprint...and we left + feedback. I do not know what it would grade in this
condition but where it has no creases and the corners are not to bad I can't
see it getting a poor - fair rating. As stated in the auction it is sold as
    is. >>

  • that definitely does not jive with his claims of selling another reprint because he bought it to compare

why would he bid on an auction and win it when it fully states REPRINT and then decide not to go through with the transaction because he doesn't want a reprint?

I'm guessing he had a reprint to begin with, bought another reprint to "age" and sell as genuine, and then sold the other reprint he had to make it look like all the Mantles are accounted for

So where did the scan come from? The back certainly looks like a legit. The most common reprint was the one from Topps back in 1983. The backs of the cards said "1952 Topps Reprint".

If he lifted his scan from another auction, then who's was it? It's not like legit '52 Mantles are being sold left and right on Ebay. Finding the true originator of that scan (if it's not this seller) would clear things up in a hurry.

That's a good point - the 83T reprint actually says on the bottom: TOPPS 1952 REPRINT SERIES - if you look at the link provided by Invader73 - they are selling a reprint - check out the back - these cards - whichever one you want to look at are all probable counterfeits as opposed to altered Topps reprints - what do you think - the whole thing seems very fishy to meimage

And by the way, if it is not a legit Mantle 83T reprint, it's not worth the $ dropped in that auction - I've seen reprints of these kind going for 5 bucks back in the late 80's I believe.
