To cross or not to cross

First let me say Hi!!! (newbee) I started a Morgan collection (couldn't be orginal) and have about a 50/50 mix of NGC and PCGS slabs. Have a NGC registry set and just started a PCGS set of Morgans. You know the problem. Is it worth it to send in 20 NGC coins for a possible cross into PCGS slabs? Almost all are over the $300 limit for economy service so we're talking about some pretty good pocket change for grading fees. I feel I am a fairly good at grading Morgans and all should meet or exceed PCGS standards...but who knows?
Looking for advice, tips, or whatever! Thanks! (sorry this one was so winded)

First, WELCOME! That is a question only you can answer. If you bought the coin for the sake of the coin it shouldn't matter what holder it is in. I personally have crossed a few coins for my registry set of dimes, however, I don't think I would try to cross that many. You could pick up a nice coin or more simply for the cost of putting it into PCGS plastic. I don't know how Morgans cross either, from what I have seen the NGC stuff will usually cross at a lower grade. Good luck what ever you decide.

  • By all means cross to PCGS! I've been collecting coins for 32 years and slabs for about 15. PCGS is the leader in certified coins. Period.
Welcome to the boards. Keep collecting, keep upgrading, and keep it PCGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the boards, but there is no simple answer to your question. I don't have a set registered here but several across the street. My IHC's are mostly in PCGS slabs but the nicest ones I own are in NGC slabs. I refuse to play the game and cross them, they are the same coin regardless of what holder they are in. In regards to Morgans depending on whether they are common date or not and the value their really isn't much difference in value if any between NGC slabbed coins and PCGS slabs.

If what slab is the most important to you or whether you want to impress your brethen here with your collection, then yes by all means try to cross them. You might have to send them in multiple times to get them to cross, that's just the way it is.

  • If your coins do cross, the increase in marketable value will more than cover the cost of the grading fees.

Personally, I have had bad luck crossing NGC Morgans to PCGS at the same level about 0/10. If it were me I would sell the NGC and buy PCGS graded coins.

You could also make an NGC Registry Set and include the PCGS Coins.
  • Welcome!

I have been slowly getting some crossed over; the competitive side of me likes the registry, and
the PCGS registry seems to have a lot better variety of collections than the NGC one. It can be
frustrating to send 4 coins in and have none of them cross, but since I like the coins, I can live
    with it.

  • Thanks for all the welcomes and the thoughts on the subject. Since I purchased all for the coins and not the slab, I feel they should cross. Now, if PCGS downgrades and won't cross just because they are NCG slabs, I'll just maintain my registry set with NCG and delete the one I started with PCGS. Thanks again and looking forward to chatting in the future.

PS: I sent them in today! I'll let you know the results.

  • Great logic. Believe in your coins and your ability to feel so strongly above crossing. Best of luck and let us know how it works out.

  • Late coming, work always seems to get in the way of hobbiesimage. I think PCGS judges fairly on crossovers. This batch was 15 NGC slabs, all handpicked. I included 3 that I would not have giving the grades to myself. 2 of those did not cross, one didimage. The bonus was a PQ++ 79-s morgan ms66 that came back a 67image. The lesson (from a wise old dealer) "buy the coin, not the slab"!!!!

  • Are you saying you crossed 12 of 15 at the same grade and one got bumped up a point? If so great job!

Do you mind sharing your submission number so we can better understand your cross rate?

  • The invoice must be at work. But yes, all crossed at the same grade except a 1879-S that came back a MS67. There is link to my set at the bottom. I have a long way to go!!! But I know I have purchased from some of the members and with their help, some year, I'll fill it out.
