Mercateers, Any new coins? Mine's on the way.

Finished paying the blood money to get my new auction win today. From their photos, it looked very nice. Very nice indeed. Will make a nice upgrade in my set. Anyone else pick up any new Mercs? This board is too quiet from the "Mercateers". We usually set the standard for quality topics.image

    Hi John,

So quit teasing and tell us what you bought already! Can I have first dibs on your old dime if I need it? I totally struck out in all the auctions, but bought a nice 24-P MS65FB upgrade with gorgeous toning a few days ago. I'll try to post some photos later. Congrats on the NP, whatever is is. image

I picked one up off of teletrade the other day!

  • Lucy sent to me a nice 39-S Offwhite in PCGS-65, and a BEAUTIFUL toner, greyish when you look at it straight on, but as you tilt it, a little bit of purple and red shine through, looks wonderful. It's a '36 in PCGS-65... but it really should be a 66, a couple, including Lucy, have said it would get a 6 at NGC or ANACS easilly, and shoulda been a 6 with PCGS. There's 1 hit on the face, and another on the neck, there's 2 or 3 hits in the field in front of the face, and there's some chatter in the Reverse fields... it's a really nice coin... Thx again to Lucy!

Here's a '39-S in MS64FB that I got recently, and I'm debating whether to replace my 65 non-FB coin with it. What do you folks think?

    imageimage

I saw a '25-P Merc in MS65FB on eBay a week or so back, and at the time a board member had the high bid (and it wasn't Ken!). I didn't see if he won it or not, but it looked like a pretty coin.

Respect for a Mercateer bid was shown on the 25P that was on Ebay. He who has the first bid put up gets the right of way here. Another will show up later on. Anyway I am broke.....image

Jim very nice picture of the 39S. I suppose the dab of stuff in the right obverse field kept it at 64 ? White but pretty.

Waynes 24P is a Toner and from what I have seen a nice coin that would fit into yours trulys set very well.

John and Tony ....date of the coins ? Teasers.. and George will have a complete set before he knows it.

  • image guys. Nice Mercs. As for me "nada"on my set. Im still waiting for that darn short set.

    Walt image
  • image Thank you Fairlane, though for the moment, I'm just working on my short set, '34-'45... 10 coins complete... 9 in PCGS, 1 in NGC... and I am planning on getting a '45-S Micro at the end of the month at a coin show. wingedliberty is going to help me try to cherrypick an undergraded one raw and I'll submit it to NGC with their EarlyBird. (It's worth it to me, I'm impatient image) Would be awesome to cherrypick a misattributed Micro S, but I doubt that'll happen... but would be nice if it did. image I might get a job this summer... when that happens, I'll be going for the '42/1 Mercs... image I'm going to wait until my cashflow is significantly higher before I go for the complete set and the '16-D, '21 and '21-D... Sucks being on an $80 a month budget... and even that is limited because I do other things outside of coins... though I can save my Lunch money for an extra $50 a month... image

    Jim,

that was meimage just keeping a low low profile but I still did not get it and yes from what I've been told it is a super 25FB so I'll wait until I see it.
sheez these merc folks are so damn sharp ...some of you know what the other did or did not way before the doer did that or in the end did not do!
oh and BTW I'd go for the 64FB anyday.

John/Dimetime I ignored the thread last nite due to lack of information - but now that others have raisewd this concern - WHAT DID YOU BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????

  • Only a couple spots away! But the PCGS Registry isn't my main concern, I'm not confining myself to only PCGS slabs, but NGC, and if I see one I like better, I would buy ANACS, it's just that the only coins that have caught my eye have been in PCGS slabs... I decided if I'm going to submit, I'll go to NGC, a couple reasons behind that, not in the least is the turnaround times, even PCGS' 30 days guarenteed isn't always a guarentee... but also because NGC is right here in Florida with me, so shipping will really only be a day or 2, which also cuts down on the time my little beauties are away from me... and at the upcoming Lakeland show, NGC will be there, so I can save on having to ship to them! image Yeah! Isn't that great! But, I did decide NGC over ANACS, b/c of the value factor, though I do think ANACS is gaining more respect as a slabbing company with the general numismatics community, and of course, no one beats their variety attribution... image

  • OK, I got the 1921-P in MS65FB. A perfect match for my 21-D. The coin looked really nice in their pictures. Jumps my XF40 to a 65FB.image

    Ken,

I was glad to find it, I just hope I didn't overpay by too much. The photo looks great, and I will have the coin in hand tomorrow (its at the Post Office now). I'll pm you the link.

No new coins here recently, but I am looking at the 20-P on ebay. I would like to upgrade to a 65, but the opening bid is over the 195 G/S Ask. Anyone else have an opinion on the coin? Oh, it is of course a NB coin.

Everything has been going over Gray Sheet lately. Sometimes by a bunch. Heritage had a 30P in 64FB with color that I was interested in. Its about a $150.00 coin and it went for over $350 with the juice. I just about fainted when I saw that one. Speculation seems to be running rampid (Sp).

I think the days of great deals are over. A big shucks goes along with the previous statement. image

John..... That 21-P did look like a nice coin. I might have bid on it if I hadn't spent so much at FUN. Congratulations! I'm glad it went to a board member.

Wayne..... Can't wait to see pics of your '24-P. I like that date and the '26-P at current price levels. Lower pops than the '20-P in MS65FB, yet a bit cheaper (on the Greysheet).

Tony..... Nice snag on the '25-S; it looks better than a 62FB. Here's a link.

George..... It's refreshing to see a young guy who has his priorities straight. Coins or food? Coins, of course! Good luck with your set.

Marc..... I'm anxious to see pics of that '25-P when you get it. I was just looking at the pop report, and the '25-P is nearly as scarce as the '25-S. I guess Ken's onto something. image When I see a nice better date Merc on eBay, I usually check to see who's bidding on it. I won't bid against a board member for an upgrade, unless it's really a killer coin. If it's a date that I don't have, though, the gloves come off, and anything goes.

Lucy..... When Ken mentioned yesterday that you had a surprise, I thought perhaps you'd won the '21-P in the Heritage auction, but John's admission has ruled that out. How long are you going to keep us in suspense?

Ken..... The rest of us are thankful that you've let us buy some Mercs. image For a while, it seemed like you were trying to corner the market.

It's good to see so many great additions. The Greysheet keeps saying that bid levels for Mercs are steady, but I know I paid well over ask for a couple of additions last month. I like to see a strong market, but I hope prices aren't driven up to the point where we have trouble completing our sets.

  • Yeah, with prices going up, and the prices of higher grade early date mercs being so relatively high for me, I decided that I had to do a short set, or become disillusioned at trying to focus on the early dates too.... being able to add a coin or two a month is really nice, and really keeps my attention, and so does the forum, which was my problem when I had my first stint in collecting. I only had like 2 online coin collector friends to talk to... and now look... I got a dozen people I regularly talk with, and everyday I'm finding someone else to talk to, and discuss coin related topics with! image So much fun, and it's keeping me in the hobby! image I've built friendships here, that I don't want to lose, so it's kept me coming back. And this great discussion on Mercs is awesome... we regularly need to have threads like these, for Mercateers only!!

    Ken,

I appreciate your advice about the prices of Mercs these days. The price points keep moving up and the GS generally lags behind. Bargains are much harder to find, especially with all the eagle eyed collectors here! As always, thanks for your input, I may pull the trigger on the 20-P.
