  • So did this rumor come from an EXCELLENT SOURCE as well?

Well, I guess that settles that. So much for "sources."image

I've talked with Dave twice on the phone, and he was a really easy-going, straight-forward guy. Very nice to talk to, and seemed to be very reasonable, too.

That being said -- I hope that people here remember that not everyone is Internet-savvy, and those of us that are are not somehow holier-than-thou. It's a great hobby -- and some of the best collections are in the hands of old-timers who wouldn't know what a URL means if their ungraded Wagner depended on it.

Dave -- got your message the other day. Will call you back soon. I have been unsuccessful in reaching Jeff Brody, and that is my current hang-up. In either case, I will call you shortly.

  • Hey guys..........I guess we cant all take that "I heard it from an excellent source" story as truth anymore.

.........................I always wondered where the Inquirer and Globe all got their stories from.

    Dave-

Great post, I'm glad that you were able to clear the air about Mr. Youngs collection.

It sounds like he has quite a collection and that you have the awesome task of finding the stuff for him.

Do not worry about all the negative slamming of your grammar and typing skills, the boys' will have to control their emotions a little better.

Please continue to be a part of this board, I think that your "connection" with a big time collector such as Mr. Young would help benefit all of us.

  • Hal, Dave- Welcome to the boards. Despite the harsh beginning, keep reading and keep posting. You'll soon be able to sift through the posts and figure out who is worth responding to and who isn't.

Hal- What do you collect and what are your interestes?

Dave- Looking foward to getting some insights into the world of pro-sports. I'm sure you have some interesting stories to tell usimage

  • Just a note from PSA:

Dave came on the boards to set the record straight about Mr. Young's collection. Will Dave win an award for typing? No (I had to rag on you for that Dave - kidding), but Dave has been around the hobby for a long time and he is the main buyer for Dmitri. There are a lot of ridiculous rumors that flood the hobby and these boards but I appreciate it when someone like Dave comes on to set the record straight. For those of you who are true hobbyists, you should appreciate it to.

Dmitri is one of the most down to earth guys you could ever hope to meet and he is a dedicated collector with a good eye for quality. Dave has been working with him for quite some time now and has helped him build one of the finest collections on the planet.

95-Plus percent of Dmitri's collection is PSA graded even though he does, once in a while, buy other graded cards to fill holes in his collection.

So, in the end, please give Dave a break for his typing skills. He was trying to do the right thing - to squash the rumors about Dmitri's intentions and collection.

    Thanks for listening,

I'm just glad that a Tiger player is getting attention for something other than the 119 loses last year!
Dmitri Young has quickly grown into the team leader with a tremendous attitude. He is the foundation for the team's future. The fact that he collects makes it that much better!

Well Toppsgun is on with his mocking laugh, praying that I am finally wrong on one of my source threads and Joe Orlando is even responding with information I am sure he believes to be correct but I do not think is.

According to my source and the source does not get much better, Dmitri has crossed "a lot" of high dollar cards to GAI and is sending in all his raw new stuff to GAI. Reason is realtionship with and confidence in Steve and Mike. He also went on to say that Dave(?) who started this thread is the man and he knows this to be true.

Do you know whether the high dollar cards are in new GAI holders?

or are they still in PSA holders with GAI sticker on the back?

    Jim,

Most of us quit listening to these sources when a claim came from the horse's mouth that a GAI acquisition of SGC was imminant.

Not directed to Jim - I think the fact that several have dealt with Dave and Joe Orlando has confirmed he buys for Dmitri means that those who slammed him for posting on here should apologize. We should always welcome new forum members and assume they are being truthful unless/until proven otherwise.

    Gemint,

I agree that Dave should be welcome.

I also do not post idle chatter.

Steve Rocchi told me at Ft. W show that merger was imminent--he told several others that too--some mergers fall apart at last minute--apparently this one did.

    BOTR,

Put it this way--who would know best if GAI is getting Dmitri's high-end cards to cross over?

Who would know best if GAI is getting a lot of raw submissions from Dmitri?

Dmitri must have called you recently.

Did Dmitri tell you that all of his high end cards are actually in GAI holders now?

Davalillo - perhaps Rocchi's comments killed the deal by making it too public.

    Nick,

I honestly do not know what killed the deal. But it wasn't "don't tell anyone about this Jim"--a lot of major dealers were talking about it like it was a done deal and Steve wasn't being private about it.

Maybe Dmitri(or a rep of) did tell Dav that he was crossing to GAI. Wouldn't be a bad idea considering Davalillo is probably a major competitor for many of the same high end PSA cards. Could have been meant to "throw him off"...lol...

    Never know...lol

My source tells me this thread will continue till it's beaten way past it's death.
My source also tells me I really shouldn't care. He points out that whatever the truth is, my groceries will not cost any less at Safeway.
My source tells me that for entertainment value, continue watching the bruhaha until I tire. He also points to other options on TV reality shows.
    I trust my source completely.

They are not competing for the same cards.

According to Bailey, Dmitri is a collector of 9s and 10s HOFers and stars.

Davalillo is putting together sets in 7s and 8s.

If I recall correctly, Sean at SGC posted on their forums that a deal was never even under any serious consideration. It may have been under serious consideration at GAI but apparently SGC didn't pay much attention to the offer.

I just wonder what reason Dave would have to come on the PSA forum and say only a small percentage of Dmitri's collection is in GAI holders if it wasn't true.

I'm not trying to start a debate but just stating why I don't pay much attention to rumors that circulate in the hobby.

    Gemint,

When exactly did Dave say this?

    Dav
  • "Davalillo is putting together sets in 7s and 8s."

Koby, I cross-checked your sources (the Registry). His sets do have a lot of 7's in them. Also found a few 4's, 5's and 6's. Guess he's scaled back his goals, huh?image
  • I once sold Dmitri a Dave Winfield Rookie in PSA-9 and I would agree he's a great guy and avid collector, but if he does change grading companies, should we really care this much ?? aren't we still going to be loyal followers of PSA ?? just my two cents, and even though im not always happy with the grades i receive im sticking with strictly PSA for card grading .... and let others do what they choose to, so be it.

The obsessed one is still obsessed over my collection that has 17, 000 PSA 8s, 1000 or so 9s and 10s, 2300 psa 7s and 400 less.

Which is why I make his obsession easy for him and notify him as I finish every set in psa 8 or better.

I think 7s are great cards.....certainly nothing to scoff at. I'm sure the lower grades are jsut fillers until he can upgrade to 7s and 8s.

No question that Davalillo has a very impressive collection. Just wanted to point out that he may have interests that are very different from Dmitri Young's collecting interests.

    Remember....

No matter how many cards you have in your collection it will never make up for deficiencies in other area's.

Your wife/girlfriend still feels cheated not matter how BIG your collection grows.

I think its time some of you faced up to the real problem.

people including myself being personally bashed over nothing a guy like jim crandall should not be bashed but celebrated for his effort to keep the facts straight

    Thanks Dave,

Not on the boards to make friends(although I have made a lot in the past year)--just to state opinions and facts--if some of you cannot take it fine...but what I said about Dmitri's collection is true and what Dave is saying is true.
  • Dav, stating your opinions or facts is fine, but if you start rumors you need to provide substantial evidence to back them up. from what i've seen, you've started many rumors based on "insider info," and have yet to back any of them up with a concrete source.
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Goodriddance,

Ask Dave or Dmitri--they will tell you exactly what I am telling you--this isn't conjecture--its facts.

  • << <i>Davalillo, i dont know you or particularly care to, but you sound like you're full of sh#t and full of yourself. >>

    Will,

Jim is far from full of it. In fact, he's a tremendous person. I think Jim makes one mistake. He states the rumors he hears publicly on a PSA forum even though he knows nothing good will come from it.

Maybe he just needs to sit on some of his information? That's his call. But he is indeed a stand-up guy as you are.

    Tom,

Thanks--you are one of the many friends I have made in the past year and it has been great knowing you.

I only state rumors if I believe them to be true. This actually is factual--not a rumor at all.

This is going to sound the wrong way but I know a lot of people in the hobby--a lot of national dealers and the people at the grading companies. Most people on these boards are not friendly with these dealers. The dealers do not want to see their names in print and ask me to protect them many times--so I do.

I know a lot of people appreciate the info--some want to believe psa can do no wrong.

    Dav

  • Why does everyone care so much about this guy's collection (Dmitri)?Care about your own and don't worry about what everyone else has. It's almost like this board is an elementary school cafeteria and we are all bragging about what cards we have over our lunches.

David Bailey and Joe Orlando, please pardon me if I cross the line here but I've sat on my hands and just observed this discussion quitely but have to say a little bit about something. When I spoke to Mr.Bailey yesterday he asked me to keep certain things under my hat,so I won't be going there.Don't worry.

However,he did explain that Dimitri was offered to cross his collection into another grading comapnies holders although declined, but sought an alternative to continue a healthy relationship with both PSA and GAI.

By doing this and the plans David,Dmitri have and the degree of involvement PSA (being the dominant) GAI (subdominant) I applaud what they are all going to present as it's going to be great for the hobby. It sounds great.

Also,I look forward to whichever SMR the Full page article/add Mr.Bailey asked me if I read.Aparently David did not know that he received a promo SMR to see the article.

    Good luck everyone!
