Any guesses as to the fallout from the PCGS grading slowdown???

What I'm wondering is if anyone thinks there will be an effect on price differences between PCGS and NGC same date/same grade slabs?? Do you think that these periodic slowdowns will have an effect on the relative numbers of each companies slabs in the marketplace?? Do you think either company will see a shifting, however temporary, of their established grading standard resulting from an increase or decrease in submissions??

The general assumption is that with classic issues the two companies are close to the point of being equal. With more modern issues, PCGS is considered somewhat more strict. Perhaps one or both will become more lenient as the pace is picked up. Any thoughts? It appears to me that throughout the last year there has been a higher percentage of NGC product at all shows, major and smaller local ones.

NGC may be picking up more market share with PCGS' lengthy submission waits. NGC indeed does a quality job, but I find, when compared to PCGS grades, that if often can be one-point more lenient. That said, the perception that a NGC 68 is a PCGS 67, etc., means more money for a Newport Beach slab in sthe same grade. This, at least for many with monster coins that would bring an appreciable price increase in higher grade in PCGS plastic, to continue to submit to PCGS. Also, with its much larger and reinforced Registry, PCGS remains the choice of Registry players with raw coins. NGC's seemingly larger marketplace presence may reflect many coins that dealers and collectors are attempting to flip quickly for profit. But, PCGS had better get on the stick, and quickly, or even its hard-core supporters will increasingly think about taking a stroll across the street ...

None. Because it isn't the first time by a long shot. And there weren't long term repercussions like we predicted 13 months ago when it first shot up to 70+ days. No reason why it would now, especially since people are used to it.

No effect at all as PCGS continues to dominate!

It's right too as PCGS bought back Boom's coin and David Hall even call Boom personally over a $300 coin. My biz goes to PCGS!

I can only judge by what I read here, and from that I conclude it will make no difference. There are too many people who will live with whatever the waiting period might be to affect how many slabs issue forth from each company.

With PCGS running at full capacity, there would be no apparent reason to change a thing. It's kind of fascinating, because it's hard to think of any other business where you could have two or three very strong market leaders, and yet one of them has a perceived delivery problem and is unaffected by it.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes, David helped me out once. After about the 12th post of economy submission results that arrived five to six weeks after mine, I sent a PM to David. He "goosed" my coins and they were done within a couple of days ...

Does this mean even a submission at 30 bucks a pop will take 126 days like the $16 variety econ. submission?

I heard PCGS was changing there name to GAOL.......Graded After Overly Long-time!! image
  • I've got 26 coins in front of me to be graded. Well, guess where they are going? Sure aren't going on the slow boat to California. PCGS bought back Boom's coin and David Hall even call Boom personally....Wow! David Hall can't even answer questions put up on the Q&A. They don't even have a systematic order of grading at their place of business. My last order of coins were sent to PCGS on Saturday, and I don't expect to see them again until Memorial Day. World Series of Grading and Show schedules seem to be more important than attending to a failing business at home.....Ken

I doubt that there will be an across the board fallout... I think it depends on series and a collectors ability to determine which coin best fits into his/her collection. As for the investor...they need to learn to grade like everyone else does.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
