No reason to open any proof set UNLESS you own one of the very rare "no S" sets that contain the 1968, 1970, 1975 or 1983 dime or the 1971 nickel or the 1990 penny. Those sets should definately be broken up and the rare coin slabbed by PCGS. JMHO. Steve

Is it a flat pack set , or are the coins in individual envelopes in a square box? The flat packs do a decent job of protecting the coins, as long as there are no punctures in the mylar. The boxed sets, though, tend to deteriorate over time, due to the coins reacting with the sulphutr in the paper, and the staple that holds the coins together.

I would leave a flat pack alone, but would open a boxed set to check the condition of the coins. It's entirely possible that coins in a boxed set will be OK. If that's the case, I'd leave them stapled and in their original box. I have a 1953 set where the silver coins have remained white, with just a bit of toning around the edges; the cent and nickel look as good as the day they were struck.

I think enough sets have been opened. If you don't open it, someday you may sell it for more than what the slabbed contents are worth today. If there's a great coin in there now it will still be there next year too!! so what's the rush.

Most people I know who bought original sealed sets do so because they WANT to open them, hoping there is a treasure inside. If you;re undecided -- flip a coin -- but not the proof set. cheers, alan mendelson
  • I just bought 2 1956 proof sets and one of them is unopened. It kinda bugs me but it is kinda fun just wondering too!

  • To spare you the shock of what may lie inside, I'll open it for you! image
