Is this holder OK? reference from SGC board

While reading the sgc board, there was reference made that WIWAG is still selling under the following ebay user id. This Koufax card came across my radar and I opened the link and could not help to notice the edges of the holder , especially the bottom. Any thoughts, maybe I am being paranoid as the card looks good in the scan, but I don't want to get stuck with a nightmare . thanks

The botom and the right edge look odd, with intermittent light patches. But the card looks nice. Tough to say, but if you have any doubts, there are more cards out there.

The problem is that the seller went a little overboard with the "sharpen" feature on his editing program.
  • and as usual the SGC board posters
(most of whom are exiled former members
    of this board!)
    are trying to start something.

Can someone post the scan? For some reason, I get the dreaded "red X" on the ebay page...

I know the SGC guys are exciled but I am just looking for opinions. I have never dealt with this seller and I know nothing about them besides what I see on ebay. I don't want to get stuck with a bad card but i don't want to pass if there isn't anything there as the card is one I need. Looking at the scan, it looks fishy, If others have bought cards from them that looked similar but when they received the cards the holder was fine, maybe due to the sharpening like John said , then that would be helpful. if others have bought cards from them and had issues then that would also be helpful. thanks

You answered your own question. Stay away and buy another card.

Their GAI cards and an SGC card they have up for auction all look 'fishy' too,
so it must be their scanning technique.

It's too bad that someone's reputation can be ruined by a disgruntled ex-psa employee,
who tells a rumour to a disgruntled ex-psa submitter, who then proceeds to concoct yet another fantasy conspiracy theory.

    Sad really ...

Scans of holders sometimes make them look questionable. I would ask the seller if they have a return policy. If they do, ask them if the holder is cloudy anywhere around the perimeter. If not, then buy the card. If it arrives and shows signs of tampering, return it for a refund. It looks like a nice card though a bit thin left to right. It may be from vending and therefore slightly undersized.
  • PackCollector- I see your concern. Although the card looks fine, the bottom edge of the holder seems to have some issues. Now sometimes the edges of PSA holders will have some "clouding" at spots or rough, scratched areas. But this card exhibits that right along the whole bottom. I compared the card to some of his other PSA offerings, and all the others cards don't exhibit this. All the other PSA holders looked pristine, except for the Murray PSA 9. But even the Murray holder didn't have the consistent cloudiness that the Koufax holder shows on the bottom edge.
I would buy the card and than send it to PSA for reholdering. Mention any concerns you might have with the card and see how they respond.

  • I think the real question here is has anyone done business with this dealer? There has been speculation that this eBAY ID is the WIWAG guys. Anyone have any insight?

I have bought from Card Merchant many times. The only problem I've had is with a tall boy that was slightly damaged in shipping due to being too small for the slab (moved around a bit). The '62 Fleer PSA 8's I have bought from them are particularly sharp. I don't have them in front of me, but when I get home I'll check them out for edge cloudiness and signs of trimming.

  • From the reading I've done their name is Poway Cards. Actually the affiliation with WIWAG happened to be identified on these boards. The exiled members had nothing to do with this, as far as I can tell.

The holder in this example looks ok.

here is the response i received with the new scans. the new scans had that yellow lining that that some scanners produce but the holder looked perfect. I guess in his effort to correct the lining is what made the holder look bad. I kind of feel bad that I asked this here instead of going to him directly 1st.

AS PROMISED PLEASE SEE ATTACHED SCANS OF 1961 KOUFAX. ALSO IF YOU
HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS CARD FEEL FREE TO CHECK WITH PSA ON DATE
    GRADED ETC. THANKS, WOLF.

Both the card and the holder in the scan above look fine.

    Guys-

Play with the "sharpen" feature in your photo editing software and you will see the same results with your card. This looks like a case of too much photo manipulation.

    pack,

I hope you got a larger scan. With this size you can't tell if their are fish eyes on the red background
of the player's name. It looks like there could be some. And that would not make the card a great
8 to me. Rob McBride (buckwheat) has a website with his cards. All the scans are large as they
should be to get a good idea on a card. Good luck if you bid!
