19th century proofs and hairlines...

Hi, Everybody -

Is it unusual to be able to detect some hairlines on a PR65 19th century proof coin? I have a couple that have a few hairlines visible under magnification. Otherwise, the coins are pretty much mark-free.

Are NGC and PCGS equally as strict when it comes to hairlines on proofs?

Thanks,

Dan

Virtually all 65's have some hairlines.

PCGS is strict in the extreme. NGC is more forgiving.

If the hairlines are only visible under magnification, then I wouldn't think it would preclude a 65 grade. Hairlines are to be expected on most 19th century proofs, from old-time cabinet friction.

I agree with Russ. NGC seems to allow some fine

hairlines even on PR-66 specimins ,but PCGS does not.

I really do not like purchasing high grade 19th Century proofs

    in any holder but PCGS.

I like PR63 to 64, with some cameo contrast (though not necessarily a CAM designation). I've never broken into the PR65-and-up range. 64's have been good to me.
