I would like to have a small collection of these to go with my hammered coins. Here's the dealers discription.
IM-2602 (105x70mm) Original leaf from a medieval, manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of ruled text, written in Latin on animal vellum. In fine gothic, textura script. Two two-line illuminated initials in burnished gold on blue and red ground with delicate white tracery. England, c. 1450.
This leaf continues the Prayers of St. Bridget to Jesus Christ. The first illuminated “O” begins the eighth (of fifteen) prayers: “O ihesu dulcedo…” (The prayer asks that through the bitterness of the vinegar and gall which Christ tasted on the cross, he may permit us to receive communion in the hour of our death for the good of our souls). The second illuminated “O” begins the ninth prayer: “O ihesu…” (This prayer invokes the memory of the mockery of the Jews at his crucifixion, and his words: 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' (Matthew, 27:46). It asks that through the anguish which he suffered then, he may not forsake us in the anguish of our death).English manuscript Books of Hours are very uncommon. In 1533 Henry VIII decreed that books relating to the practices of the Church of Rome should be destroyed. Most of the remaining examples were held secretly in private hands

There is an excellent source for illuminated manuscripts on eBay. Their id is leaves-of-old. While I have not purchased this type of material from Charles Puckett I have purchased other prints from him in the past. The description sounds like one of his.

Our library has a HUGE bound manuscript from about the same era, similarly illuminated. It takes up a whole table (or would, if it weren't in a glass case, of course.
My Dad is the Assistant Director of the library, and they recently moved into a new building, so I had the opportunity to actually leaf through that thing- it was interesting. All in Latin, of course. Might have been early 16th century (just before the troubles that Henry VIII stirred up for the monasteries).
Do you know of any other dealers that sell these? Thanks
LordM, that's really cool.
Thank you for posting it.

Jester, if you're interested in antique books Philly has an abundance of great shops. And, yeah, that is really neat to see the effects of the type.. I've got one where the first "A" on page is always cocked sideways.. neat, but kinda annoying to read through though
I also collect old-timey maps to go with my colonial coin collection

<< <i>Python, that's way cool! One of my favorite finds was a big old leather bound and embossed family Bible printed in Philadelphia in about 1820, with some family history written on one page. It's amazing!

I have a Bible printed in PA in 1810, in German and a French play book from 1785, they are neat, but Brett's page blows them away!

I have not dealt with any other illuminated manuscript dealers. At the time I was buying Audubon and Gould bird prints from him as well as early 19th Century architectural prints of Romanesque and Gothic Churches, Abbeys and Cathedrals.
