World Series Results

The winners of the second round of the PCGS World Series of Grading are;

Dealer Division

1st place - Robert Johnson 85.5 (out of 100)
2nd place (tie) Jason Carter and Jeff Garrett (85)

Honorable mention to 4th place finisher Jim Halperin of Heritage with 82.5, who says he leading the "senior" division. Hey Jim, there is no senior division in either the coin market or the PCGS World Series of Grading.

Collector Division

1st place - Craig Eberhart 62
2nd place - Nick Casio 60.5

We'll post more detailed results on the website tomorrow. And I'll be sending out scores to all the participants tonight and tomorrow.

Everyone seemed to have fun. Dealer participation was very heavy. A one dealer said, "I don't care about the money, but bragging rights have become very important."

Congrats to Nick! And, very nice showings by our dealers ... ole centsles sells enough slabs, I guess he has gained a heckuva education, not to diminish what he may have started with!

Centsles? Russ, I was wondering the same thing. memorabiliabob on eBay is also Robert Johnson. However, both of those Robert Johnsons are from FL. Given the show was in Long Beach, I'm betting it was Robert R. Johnson of Robert R. Johnson, Inc. of San Francisco. Would love to know for sure.

    Wayne,

You're probably right. It's a pretty common name.

Bob Johnson of Centsles travels to coin shows. Robert Johnson of SF probably has zero interest in the World Series. Congrats to Centsles!

Considering the fact that he sells enormous quantities of junk PCI and NTC, it's more than a little intriguing that he's that capable of grading to PCGS standards.

You know, if Centlsles wins the finals, he gets a big time bonus. For every ACG coin he lists on eBay, he can legitimately state that "This coin was personally hand selected for its outstanding quality by Robert Johnson, winner of the 2004 PCGS World Series of Grading." This could be really interesting...

I'd be very surprised if it was Senseless. He got ripped off bigtime by Hager, and if he knew how to grade it wouldn't have happened.

Alan and Diane Hager dealt with a well known Florida coin dealer Bob Johnson, who sells on the Internet, eBay as "centsles." Bob would come into the shop ASA-Accugrade weekly and submit some 500 to 600 coins for grading. Al Hager would himself grade all Bob's coins. I would put the labeling on the assigned grades to the coins and some of them in Accugrade holders. Alan would drastically downgrade all Bob's coins knowing the certification fees on the 500 to 600 coins graded would be expensive, because Alan would charge the same rate as if it were a higher grade. Alan and Diane were charging $10, $12, $15 a coin based on the grade Alan assigned. Now, this is when the unethical roles of Alan and Diane Hager came into place. Alan would say to Bob, "Now, well, Bob, how are you going to pay for these certification fees?," knowing that he would end up with half of Bob's coins, mostly undergraded pieces and gold coins, as payment for certification fees. After Bob Johnson would leave the office all of these gold coins and undergraded coins would be placed on my desk for relabeling. What graded as an MS-61 would become an MS 64; an MS-62 would become an MS-65, and an MS-63 would become an MS-66. After the coins were reholdered to the newly assigned grade he would then proceed to AH Collectibles room and have Clayton Spencer list some or all of these coins on his eBay site on AH Collectibles."

The above excerpted from K6AZ's DIANE HAGER VS. BARRY STUPPLER transcripts.

Interesting story, but it has little to do with Bob's ability to grade. I've known Bob for many years. He's very capable and it does not surprise me in the least that he did well in the contest.

Seems irrelevant now but memorabiliabob also from FL travels to shows as well. I met him at the ANA midwinter in Charlotte last year.

  • David,

Any chance to take the grading challenge at the ANA money show in Portland? I can't make it to any other show and would love to participate. BTW If you are a collector can youtake both tests?

Anyone else need/want to take it in Portland who would not have taken it other wise?

This was a lot of fun and I would recommend anyone who gets a chance, to do it. Figure
if you miss every coin by 1 grade point you will still score a 60 and that looks good enough
to possibly get you to the finals......image

Nick (Cascio) PCGS didn't spell my name right for the registry awards either.

PCGS should hire Nick to grade roosies and washington quarters -- he'll work cheap and fast and the waiting time will drop by half!!!
