British Fractional Farthings, anyone else collect them?

This series of small denomination coppers features a short number of coins to complete by type, only ten total.

Fractionals were issued under George IIII, Wm IIII, Victoria, Edward, and Geo V only.
The denominations were 1/4 farthing (Victoria only), 1/3 farthing (all monarchs listed), and 1/2 farthing (Geo IIII, WM IIII, Vic only).

In my experience the toughest coins to find in UNC condition are ANY Wm IIII 1/2 farthing, and the one year issue 1844 1/3 farthing.

The other coins in the series (except the Wm 1/2 farth) seem quite available in circulated conditions including the 1844 1/3 farthing.

I would love to collect them, if I had an adequate purse!

I've found that the 1/4 farthings are the hardest for me to find in the higher conditions. The ones that are available and coming out of Sri Lanka are in pretty rough shape usually.

farthing, at one time about a year ago, I could choose between UNC 1/4 farthings. The one I did select raw for my set is now an ANACS MS64BRN. Finding them in full red with no unattractive spotting is quite a battle.

The ¼ and ½ farthings are difficult beasts indeed to collect.

As for the one year copper 1/3 farthing, I stumbled on to this example a while back:

Given what I've seen in the last couple of days, I doubt this example is up to the Mongoose standard of excellence....

  • As tough as the 1844s go , that is a nice example wybrit. My placeholder/filler is a VG+, and I hope to land a true UNC...not sure if that will happen though. I'll look for the rest of the year, and if I can't land one, I'll probably sell my fractionals.

This is a list of my set so far, all ten types are covered. The set is technically completed, but I have some work to do.

    1852 1/4 farthing ANACS MS64BRN
    1844 1/3 farthing Raw, VG+
    1827 1/3 farthing ANACS MS64BRN
    1835 1/3 farthing ANACS MS64RB
    1884 1/3 farthing PCGS MS65RD
    1902 1/3 farthing ANACS MS63RD
    1913 1/3 farthing ANACS MS64RD
    1830 1/2 farthing ANACS MS63BRN
1837 1/2 farthing ANACS EF40 (don't know if an upgrade will happen...TOUGH in anything higher)
    1843 1/2 farthing PCGS MS63RD

Don't really collect 'em, per se, but I've had one or two nice 'uns over the years.

  • I have some in my GB type set, but not to the standard of Mongoose's. But they are a tough little coin to find in nice condition.
