Today's Birmingham, MI Coin Show

This show of about 30 dealers has been around for 40 years. It is held in an upscale suburb of Detroit (the show is actually in Bloomfield Hills). The weather conditions were excellent for this time of the year. Attendance was heavy all day long. I was only somewhat successful in selling coins and ended up pulling most back for later sale on eBay. I was successful in selling some exonumia to dealer Bob Williams, who I have known for many years. In talking to some of the dealers late in the show it appeared that results were below expectations. One dealer reported selling a good number of slabbed generic gold coins. Other dealers said the business was just not there as it had been in previous years. One said that in past years it was not unusual to see buyers with very full wallets come in and buy heavily. This was apparently not the case this year.

I purchased a raw XF-40 1867 Rays Shield Nickel in the morning. Later in the day I went back and found an XF-40 1867 No Rays Shield Nickel that I had missed on the first pass. Both coins were original, problem-free coins and were reasonably priced.

The market seems to have slowed in this area since the last show in November (the MSNS show).

I didn't get the mailing. I wish someone would have posted a heads up earlier this week (or maybe they did
and it was lost in the volume).

Maybe I'll make it next year.

OT: U.S. Mint subscriptions for Michigan state quarters


Sorry about the OT question. The U.S. Mint has not yet started processing the subscriptions for the new

2004 Michigan state quarter. Has anybody received their order yet?

OK, I'll answer my own question.


They started processing subscription orders today 2-1-04


Usually, they process the subscriptions before they even start selling them on the website.
