Any modern collectors here?

I've been lurking for quite a while, and I post a bit here and again. I've noticed that there are very few investors/speculators in new card markets. Anyone want to raise their hand and admit to buying lots of Bowman Chrome?

I collect modern, but I'm not a rookie speculator and don't buy much Bowman Chrome at all - a few single cards at good prices, but that's it.

    Modern ???

Many believe cards made starting in 1981 are the begining of "Modern" after the Topps-only era in cards ended.

I do collect many issues from 1981 through 2002. It just seemed too much stuff , too many inserts, too many serial #ed cards, too much variance in prices, Etc., and I stopped with 2002. Perhaps when or if Topps produces a 1956 facsimile retro- type baseball set I'll jump back in.

I was collecting the 1999 Bowman Chrome BB in the "international" insert/subset/parallel version but have let it sit unfinished. The Bowman Chrome products seem more stable in value than the typical "current" issues. They are usually quite attractive as well.

Bowman chrome has proved to be THE one to collect in recent years but some of the other
companies are catching up. The hottest rookie in 2002 is not found in a topps product but
instead in the Donruss Update Elite set. Prior's best rookie cards were upper deck cards
and last year Matsui wasn't found in one topps product.

Bowman chrome is still a great product despite some major blows to poster boys..Josh Hamilton and
Toe Nash.....remember him? on every topps rookie box one year and then rapist the next!

The rookie roledex which beckett puts out every year is absolutly essential to speculation. It is hard
to find low number of rookie cards of certain players but when you do you can cash in. Remember Reyes
    last year?

Have you opened any donruss update this year? Im curious how you think it stacks up in both
hits and player selection against the bowman chrome.

  • I'm very much a collector of modern cards Jeff along with some vintage.

I would always stand up and be counted amongst modern collectors.
  • I collect both modern and vintage but am selective on the modern. I do like the bowman chrome.

I collect both vintage (especially 1968-1980) and modern, because it is fun to rip boxes and find the new modern treasures. It gets tiring (and expensive) after a while, but I still do it. I love Bowman Chrome (Baseball and Football) and SP Authentic (Football). I really could care less about rookie speculation, but it is nice to find a RC you pulled a few years ago being a hot card today.

  • I collect modern as well as vintage. In modern football I do Fleer, Fleer Tradition, Ultra, Topps, Score, Upper Deck, Stadium Club and SP Authentic. In modern baseball I do Fleer, Fleer Tradition, Ultra, Score, Donruss, Topps, Stadium Club and Bowman.
I know Bowman Chrome has been hot but I never liked the product. The cards were always just the same as regular Bowman with just the Chrome technology added. If the cards were different I would have initially pursued the product. Whatever, just collect what makes you happy.

I usually buy the Topps Heritage product each year.
  • I have a few Bowman Chrome cards. I have about 190 Dustin McGowan, 150 JJ Hardy, and 125 Lou Palmisano 03 Chrome Draft. Still trying to get more.
Baseball Card Heaven, the closest card shop to the Las Vegas Strip.

Our current ebay auctions, and of course BaseBallCardHeaven.com
  • LOL......I'd say your a modern collector Jason !

I'd unburden you of a couple of those JJ Hardy, but I'm sure their going through your "grading screen" as we speak...so, I'll look for them in graded version shortly !
  • I collect vintage and modern. I’ve opened 2 boxes of Bowman Chrome this year and opened a few in 2001 and 2002. I open at least 1 box of nearly every new baseball and basketball product, mainly b/c I like opening packs (I never outgrew childhood I suppose). I also buy certain rookies I’m speculating on off of EBay. I'm not sure that constitutes "a lot" of Bowman Chrome and at this point, I'm not sure I'd want 100+ cards of 1 rookie. Unless of course it's the next Dontrelle/Mauer/Pujols. If only I had that crystal ball.
