eBay Second Chance Offers?

I just noticed that eBay has an option to send a second chance offer to an underbidder when you have more than one item available, but didn't have a Dutch auction. Anyone use this option or have an opinion on using it?

  • I tried it several times. I had one taker, one said no and all the others simply ignored my 2'nd chance offer.

I have sold many "unsold items". All ebay wants is their fees..They don't care which one buys. But I don't tell ebay cause I offer to under bidders, leaving ebay out. Don't use the option-just contact an underbidder via email

I've taken sellers up on thier offer twice now, once today. I bid the going price ($24) and was out bid by $4. Got the offer this morning and took it. The only other one one ebay at the time was $30. Guess its good if the price is right. I didn't think of using it as a seeling tool as you mentioned but doesn't seem CarlWohlforth has had much luck with it. I still might try it though.

Most of the time the underbidders will just ignore the offers, but it does not cost anything to try, so why not. Ebay does not let you contact the underbidders directly anymore.

  • its another way that e-bay rapes of sellers
  • If I bid low and win I feel the seller is commited to sell to me at that price. If I lose and get a second chance offer it makes me wonder if I am really getting a bargain. Joe

I'll give you a tip. Before the item that does not sell hits that part of your page..."Items I have not sold" ...click on bid history - Even after the item is over and done with the bidders' email addresses are available to the seller only. I suggest you print that page. When the item hits the unsold column and says "second chance offer", over to the right-you contact the buyers, especially if they are past cusomers of yours or you know them and instead of clicking on their ebay user ID and going thru ebay's email system, which has this stupid warning on it(IT's there because they don't want to miss a dime) you email the people at their personal addresses! They are your coins and if they did not sell on ebay-NOTHING prevents you from telling Joe Blow that he can have the item for such and such! All ebay wants is their final fees. I'll tell you another secret. Paypal, owned by ebay won't tell you this but I will...Say you have a business account with pay pal...MORE FEES, RIGHT? If the buyer has the ability to write an e-check OUT OF HIS CHECKING ACCOUNT-NOT HIS PAYPAL ACOUNT and we're talking about a sale for hundres or a couple thousand dollars. ...if the buyer pays out of his own checking acct thru pay pal...YOU-THE SELLER only incur a flat fe of $5.00. A personal customer paid me this way-$2400.00 and pay pal omly charged me $5.00 Big difference-huh ? What I am saying is once you're done with ebay and the item you listed did not sell, it's none of their business what you do as long as you do not solicit thru their email system!image

I've made several second chance offers and had about 1/2 of them picked up.

You don't use a dutch auction because you want the number 1 and 2 bidder to get the price as high as possible.
If you like the high bid and you have another of the same generic item (like a modern proof set) then you'll
generally like the second place price. This way you get rid of more of your items at a decent price and you aren't
competing with yourself by having both of your items for sale at the same time.

You get the second feedback and the same assurances if the bidder backs out (after he accepts). Ebay gets their
final value fee but not the listing fee. It's a win/win.

For those who say you don't owe ebay any cut on the second one, it's their venue. You only got in touch with the
second person because of their venue. Quit deluding yourself. (not like I've never done it, I just know when I
    do something wrong)

    YMMV,
