Braun & MS70 coin restorer?

I have read with interest the multiple discussions of cleaning vs. not cleaning, how to use acetone and how not to get acestoned. My primary interest is in collecting circulated Lincolns with errors like RPMs or DDOs. I have found in numerous occassions that I can not see clearly through the crud to determine if one of the coins I am looking at has an error. I have tried acetone but it does not get rid of most of the crud on a coin. I also tried soaking a coin in MS 70 and then rubbing gently with a cotton swab. If I had 24 hours a day this would be a great method but this is a hobby so I don't.

On really dirty coins I have used MS 70 and a Braun electric toothbrush. This works fabulously to clean the crud off the coin. I then dip them in distilled water to rinse the MS 70 off. I have read posts that clearly state MS 70 is not a cleaner so in the end would my coins be considered cleaned or restored ? Attached is an example picture.

  • Read this thread about Goo Gone.

I don't collect copper, but if coppercoins says it's safe to use, I'd trust that advice.

Also, I'd be very apprehensive getting an electric toothbrush at any coin I like.

  • I don't believe the electric toothbrush method would be recommended.
  • David,

Thanks for the link to the Goo Gone discussion. The appearance of the Goo Gone restored coin looks very similar to the MS 70 restored coin.

imo ms70 is not good for copper. often give's it a bluish or greenish overtone that can look quite unnatural.
