Please serious replies only. What is the job market like in your area? Specifically, teaching jobs. Mrs. ajaan and I are seriously thinking of moving south.

The snow isn't so bad, it's the constant single digit and teen temperatures that is killing us. I used to live in SE Asia and the wife came back to WNY from Phoenix.

  • I'm really trying to be serious, Ajaan, but please tell me how south you ready to move? If you are asking about Israel , well here you can find a vacation of teacher, but I'm not sure that you like it image

But you know, everything depends on specific school and specific class, and not the place image

    How about CO or NM?

  • Arkansas is ranked 49th in the nation in education! (Under Bill Clinton it was 50th.)
Arkansas teachers average salary is $24,000
Arkansas only has Collage sports, no professional teams.
Pulaski county School bus drivers are on strike even as I write this.
And I think Arkansas has the most teacher days than any other state!

Oh yea, You can buy a 5000 sf Mansion for $75,000, but its next door to a paper mill.image
And we don't have traffic jams like the entire state of North Carolina does!

My brother teaches in Mecklenberg County (Charlotte). The teaching market is about what you'd expect. Turnover rate for first-third year teachers is around 1/3. Administration is top heavy. There is a wide range of school philosophies from the pure whole language bullplop to bootcamp style schools. There are several magnet schools as well. And I think there is even a Montessorie school.

Busing has been an issue on both sides of the argument. Salaries are a little better in Charlotte than in other parts of NC and higher than SC/FL and generally on par with TN. Although NC has higher taxes than we do in TN. If you want to be nationally certified, Mecklenberg Cty will pay for it (my brother did it, and is a mentor for the program) and it is like a 5% raise automatically. The teacher's credit union is also quite good and has very low closing costs for home loans right now ($500 last I heard).

If you are considering Charlotte PM me your email address and I'll pass it along to my brother and he might be able to give you more details.

There are a number of private schools in this area. I'll try to find a listing and e-mail it to you.

BTW - I understand there is a park in the Greensboro area that is going to need a new ranger soon. It seems the current ranger spends all of his time online and bears are eating park visitors as a result.

Buffalo is also called 'The Queen City'. I'm thinking someplace smaller than Charlotte and Raleigh.

I don't know anything about salary rate comparisons but Plano, Texas (suburb north of Dallas) boasts of great public schools so I would say that it's a premium place for teachers to get positions with. The only other thing is we get hail, freezing rain and lies along the tornado alley. image
