1950 Bowman Footballcomplete in 8 or better

With the acquisition of card #11 Fritsch my 1950 Bowman Football set is complete at 142 psa 8s and 2 psa 9s. This represents the 6th vintage or semi-vintage football set that is complete in 8 or better(51 Bowman, 54 Bowman, 55 Topps All-America, 59 Topps and 60 Mayrose Franks).

Trying to complete every post-war football set(including regionals) in psa 8 or better through 1967. Please check my sets on registry and e-mail me with cards I can use.

Increasingly, most of the cards I need comes from others on the registry. Thanks and keep 'em comin'.

Next complete is hopefully 53 Bowman--need 34 and 40.

  • Congratulations, Jim. I'm sure you feel quite a sense of accomplishment finding the 144th card.

You'll really feel good when you complete one of those 500-600 card monster sets many of us have already finished. I know I did.
  • Love that set (actually, both baseball and football). In football, I have 2 - Van Buren and Bednarik. .
  • Jim

Congrats on the 8 or better. One more down many dollars yet to go, Good luck!

    Congrats Jim!

Some of us could only dream of getting that set in all 8's. Nicely done.

    Thanks guys.

Actually finishing the early Bowman football sets in 8 or better is tougher than the 1960s baseball sets--or at least all but 1962.

1952 Bowman Large and Small are extremely difficult.

Toppsgun- do you ever take a day off?
  • I cant wait for the day when somebody scoffs at me for completing such an impressive set in such an impressive grade as at least I will have those cards.

    Jim:

Congratulations -- I know of no one who is trying to complete as many sets in as high a grade as you are, in not only one sports, but four. Your accomplishments, growth and goals are astounding and speak to a "value" model that avoids over-paying.

Since it seems like some don't have a proper context of what you have achieved -- I wonder if perhaps a more tangible metric in the future would be something like "added PSA 8's during 2003" in terms of absolute quantity. I am sure that you added well over 1,000 PSA 8s over the year, and I am sure that you will add many hundreds again this year. Though sometimes the results in any one specific set may seem sometimes slow, overall, your collection must be quite astounding. You can rest assured that I will call upon you for a visit sometime so that I can see all that you have amassed. (not to mention a brief visit of those pesky '55 Bowmans that you have).

    Cheers-
    Marc

    Marc,

That was a very nice thing to say--how's the baby?

  • Awesome job Jim. I really could care less how big the set is. A vintage set in PSA 8 or better is an oustanding achievement by any stretch.

Anyone who says it's not is either ignorant about our hobby or is showing their lack of maturity.....again.

Folks, this set is super tough in PSA 8. Congrats!

    Loves me some shiny!
  • Glad I can say I helped contribute!

I believe I sent #4 Jenkins about 9 months ago (right around the time I gave up on the last 20 I needed - in order to sell the rest to get a decent down payment on the house I'm now in!!)

    Thanks guys.

On the Hall of Fame Kobe, that is flattering but I believe just Marshall is in the Hall of Fame. Charlie and Don Louchios would both be deserving candidates next. Also John Branca deserves consideration. I would probably have to be on better terms with Joe and be further along in the 100 psa 8 or better sets strategy to get there.

Agreed. Does size really matter? We're talking sportscards here people.

    Congrats. Great accomplishment. image

Jim also recently debuted in the #1 spot in 1962 Topps hockey. These are very tough cards.

    Jim,

Job well done! I don't doubt you'll reach your goals in the not-so-distant future. But ya' gotta start working on those pre-war sets. I think they're feeling unloved.image

    Bernie,

In terms of what I actually like the best to collect, nothing matches prewar baseball. The 1940 Play Ball set is fabulous. Two things hold me back--first price and second availability--prewar cards in psa 8 are genuinely scarce. Some cards are near impossible. But I expect to add to the Play Ball and Goudey sets this year.

  • mrc32, re:Toppsgun- do you ever take a day off?

Every day is a day off and better than the day before.

The goal I'm moving inexorably toward is to take 100 consecutive days off and spend NM-MT quality time doing things I enjoy. Some on this board think it can't be done and will ridicule me for trying. But I have a lot of sources of enjoyment and many fine people who contribute to my goal. I am quite confident I will make it. Next time any of you are in the area, I invite you to spend some time with me, enjoying my days off with me. I'm glad to share it. If any of you are obsessed with my progress toward this goal, I'll be happy to email you every time I complete just one of these NM-MT days in my quest.

What really bothers me about this goal are the things over which I have no control. The weatherman should do a better job of predicting the weather where I live. And law enforcement needs to catch more speeders, bad drivers and thugs who get away with ruining other people's days. More and more of these miscreants seem to be slipping through the system. It's really a detriment to the hobby (of life), you know.

    Regards,

    TG

I guess that means I'm falling another spot in the Goudey standings? Allow me my one pleasure, please?

Truly one of the more entertaing threads...without being too nasty/personal.

We all do have somewhat similar but different views, ideas, frame of references, goals, etc. Card collecting and humor go together quite well, no one should be overly thin-skined nor aloof, and might try to appreciate some "jestfull"comments.

    Tom,

No--you just have to take out a second mortgage on that house and take some of the money that you had earmarked for your son's education and put it toward that 34 Goudey set.

Everytime I look up (on my set registry sets) I see your name...... I'm still upset over your bumping me down a notch on the 66 Football... and now here you go finishing up your 50 Bowman's before I can catch you. I look up on my 57's there you are, the 62's, the 55's, the 59's... all I see is Davalillo.

So I'm gonna need you to send me a photo of yourself... that I will pin up on my dartboard in the basement. I'll put it right next to the photos of Skinsfan and Fuzzdude. Everytime I feel a little depressed over not being able to catch you guys, I just play a little darts. It makes me feel better..... about 1% better. image

P.S. - just pulling your lillo man... great job on the 50's.... Knox Ramsey in an 8 is hard to come by!

    Onegaucho,

The Jenkins was the next to last card I bought in the set and I waited for this one for 9 months. I didn't think I paid you that much that you could make a down payment on a house. As with most sets the low pops will rise and the prices will come down and it pays to be patient.

    Mike,

    Funny!

I do collect everything. Now lets start discussing this alliance to take down the Fuzz from his number one slot in certain of these years....
  • davalillo,

you completed a very popular beautiful set of nm-mt, 50+ year old cards. a daunting task indeed. sometimes i shake my head when i think of your goal of 100 vintage sets in psa 8 nm-mt, when i was working on some of the older sets, notably 54 & 55 bowman baseball in a true nm or better(raw) it was tedious and a very slow go (this was before the registry and before grading). even if i don't always agree with what you have to say, i have to give credit when credit is due. a sincere congratulations!!

  • Jim,
In some of those years, I'm going to stay pretty tough to catch. In some of those years, I am vulnerable. But don't worry, this old dog still has a few tricks up his sleeve. (Dog .... sleeves ??? sorry about that).
    Congrats on the 50 set.
I would like to point out some of the challenge to come however in the 60's. Not all cards are graded in 8 yet which is the first monkey wrench. One of the bigger problems however is the availability/ perceived value of some years. Some cards a challenging to find nice raw and yet never seem to be submitted because of the perceived low value. After all, there isn't a lot of money to be made in some years only getting 8's. Those "hard commons" are not yet apparent in all sets and have not yet brought the $ to the party to get people to take a shot at slabbing a few. I suspect that time will conquer the most of the problems.
    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

I think I sold you the Jenkins for $100. It played a part (however small) in placing a sizeable downpayment on my house. Selling the rest of the set (about 120 PSA 8s), my #1 73 '53 Reprint set, a bunch of high end 1950 Bowman baseball (incl an 8 Williams), my 1959 PSA 9 Thrills subset and a bunch of PSA 9 HOFers including a run of Mantles from 1959-1965 all helped the cause!!!
