my frustration is growing...

I haven't been able to add a new Greek coin to my collection since last August. This hasn't happened to me since 1994! Obviously, the coins I'm after are rare to extremely rare, but some of them have been offered in recent auctions.

1) Ponterio . There were plenty of high grade early 19th century Greek coins and they all brought multi-multiple Krause prices.
Just for the record I'll mention my three unsuccessfull bids:

lot 1293 Greece 1L 1842 NGC MS64BN KM 13 ($400 in unc) my bid $ 1060 , realized $2600

lot 1302 Greece 2L 1834 NGC MS64BN KM 14 ($500 in unc) my bid $ 860, realized $1700

lot 1373 Ionian islands 30L 1834 NGC MS63 KM34 ($65 in unc) my bid $ 310, realized $575

2) Heritage.

Crete 2 drs 1901

description: Prince George 2 Drachmai 1901, KM8, UNC with full brilliant mint luster and light toning along the edges. This coin has been lightly dipped long ago and displays some minor surface marks as always. One of the finest examples of this type we have seen with full frost across the Prince's neck and cheek.

Extremely rare condition and sure to see spirited competition from the Greek specialists. Est. 1,600-2,000 (Krause $1000 in unc)

realized $7475!!! (this is a dipped coin, and that's the reason it was sold raw !)

I've also seen a lot of high grade coins that I already have in equal or better grades, sell for $$$$, but it doesn't make me any happier. I'm not into coin collecting to speculate.Where does this leave me? Buying British 1901 coins to kill time....

Sorry to hear of your toubles adding to your primary collection, you have my empathy.

I think you're approaching this block in the proper way. Keep an eye out for the coins yuo really want and be ready to pounce when a good one comes along at a fair price, and kill some time in a side collection in the meanwhile.

    Dimitri,

This is happening everywhere foreign coins are sold in the US. I'll bet it is all foreign buyers coming to the US for a bargain due to the dollar's standing against the Euro and £.

That is a good point. With the dollar in free-fall it sure makes our auctions look cheap to outsiders.
