Pic Doctor

When you see a pic of a coin, what are you really seeing?

The pic of the obverse of this Morgan has eight modifications. Some are obvious, some not. Can you find them all?

Woops. I posted the answer by mistake.

    - there's an E on her headband where the B should be
    - and the two circled stars should be where they are missing in the "E PLURIBUS UNUM

This one's more subtle. Is there a grade difference between these two coins?

On the Quarter Eagle, the gash to the right of the "E" in "United" is either missing or disguised well in the bottom picture. Same with the marks to the right of the eagle's right wing (left of the arrow tip). Generally, looks as though lighting, software enhancements, or both were used to lessen the severity of the marks.

Yep, same coin with the major blemishes removed. Moral of the story: if a hack like me can make a coin look better, imagine what a pro can do. I'm not sure what digital pricures can be trusted to say about a coin. What you see is certainly not necessarily what you're going to get.

If the QE is yours, it's a nice coin. They're great pieces no matter the year.

Looks like the 1881 coinlieutenant put up the other day in his thread about not buying raw gold on Ebay.

A picture of a coin is barely above sight unseen. Except for coolness factor, grading and evaluating by picture is nearly random unless special care is taken to make sure the photograph has at least some semblance to the actual item.

And anyone can be skilled enough with a photoeditor to hide problems and bring out detail.

Okay so the rubber stamp tool has been around in Photoshop since version 3 in 1994. Why is it news now?

There's an easier tell. The editor missed the marks below the 2 in 1/2.
