My way of picture taking. Franklin pic!

There is always a lot of talk on how to take the best pictures. You hear about ott lights, reveal bulbs, copy stands, tripods, paper taped to the camera, different cameras. I feel that just utilizing natural indirect light and holding the camera by hand produces the very best results. Holding the camera in hand enables you to change the angle quickly and you don't have to adjust lighting ot camera mounting systems. These two pics were taken about 10 minutes prior to putting here. There is no need, in my opinion, for fancy systems......Ken

Excellent shot. I think my biggest problem is with my lousy macro on my camera.
From your shots do you think the background(blue cloth in this case) makes a difference?
I know my shots differ from a black or white background.

Ken, those are really nice pictures. I have a question, I have just learned how to insert a picture in a post, but I can't figure out how to make the picture large like the ones you have shown in this post. I am using Microsoft Picture It 2002 and I size the final picture 10"by10" but when I put it in a post it only shows up half the size of yours.

Digital coin photography is an interesting challenge! I purchased a Nikon Coolpix because of its excellent macro capabilities. Here's a sample proof Lincoln. This was a handheld shot but I'm sticking to tripod photos now. I think the biggest challenge for me is getting colors accurate on silver coins.

Nice shots Ken but I still prefer some kind of copy stand and a remote. Then I shoot at an angle so I can hold different color pieces of paper above the coin for it to reflect off of. This way you don't get the camera lens reflected in your image and you get nice clean fields on the coin like these:

Ken: Your photos are excellent!! Why do you place the coin on a piece of gray/blue duct tape -- for accurate color balance with a silver coin?

Why do you place the coin on a piece of gray/blue duct tape ....I use either duct tape or construction paper. That keeps the coin from being scratched by the wooden railing on my deck. Today it was duct tape because its windy outside.....image

Ken, nice pics. I've been working on my album pics lately. The lighting is tricky since there's obviously more than one coin in the frame. Natural lighting is best, but I like to play with indoor lighting. I use an Oly C-4000, supermacro mode, manual white balance, and two 60-watt Reveal bulbs. Here's my latest attempt:
