Help...insider info

Can anyone offer advice on finding mint/proof sets, especially unopened and other coins for sales in the DFW area? I would love to find a nice auction house that does estate sales, but there are also people listing numerous, unopened sets on Ebay from the Dallas/Fort Worth area and I am curious how can get hold of these also.

Thanks. I promise I wont take any dealer business away.

The best way to get into these is to make a lot of contacts. Find someone
who moves these in bulk to the wholesale buyers so you have a supply to check
or become the buyer yourself. Either way you'll need to get out and meet peo-
ple. While your waiting to get known go to the auctions and other sources. E-bay
can be a great way to find sets (use "5" in your search). Don't worry overly much
about opened/unopened since the unopened cost a great deal more and the op-
ened are often pristine and original. Don't waste your time looking at sets that are
obviously picked over since most people who do this miss little.

Get all the books whether you need them or not since it can be easy to overlook
some of the varieties. Keep your eyes open, there will be similar oportunities. It
may take a little time and there is a lot more competition for fewer and fewer sets
but it's a lot of fun to look. Good luck.

  • If there are eBay dealers you wish to contact, there is the option on the auction page to send them a message.

Heritage is in the Dallas area.

  • I've tried to ask 2-3 of them questions, but they fall on deaf ears. There is a local person selling unopened sets which I would love to find a more direct source for but he never replied. In PA, I know of auctions houses, but around here I haven;t been able to find any.

Luckily there is a show next weekend that I will hopefully get to.

  • besides Heritage, where are the other good dealers in Dallas area located. Anything near Richardson? PM me anything you know of. I get that way once in a while to visit my grandkids.

Along the same lines, I'd like to know of any unsearched hoards of early Federal coins in the So. Cal area, preferably lightly circulated or uncirculated flowing hair and draped bust material. Also interested in pre-1850 proof coins in original holders. Anyone with any info, please forward. image

Place an ad to purchase coins in the local newspaper. This has brought results (for me) wherever I've been.

That's not how dealers see it.
