Help Please: French Colonies Sou - 3 Coins

Hi Everyone
I don't have a relevant Krause catalogue for these three coins and basically I would like to know if I have described them correctly and what the values are for the lower grades VG to F.... Where did these coins circulate? Any other info...? THANKS

It's a commission sale for a dealer and he wants a fair few quid for them, so I'm a little bit picky about what I write down on Ebay... The titles are his words. He's had them on his list for a while and thought they may do better with an international audience.

    Lloyd:

Here are values from the 2003 Redbook (the standard US coin reference):

    1722-H sou (looks like a 1722/1) - $100 in VG
    1739 sou marque - $50 in VG
    1767 sou - $75 in VG

the book says these circulated throughout French North America (Canada, Louisiana and the West Indies)

These are commonly included in US colonial sets, so my guess is the Redbook values are closer to what US collectors would pay. image
  • Lloyd, you might find some info here. Text
  • I would definitely list them in the U.S Colonials category. They are all three very decent/nice circulated pieces. There is still controversy as to how many of these coins circulated in what is today the United States, but they had to have seen action in both Canada and down in the Mississiippi Valley (New Orleans). To what extent, again, is always debated. I don't believe they were meant to circulate in any one locale, just in the French New World colonies in general. It's interesting that the 1767 piece doesn't have the "R F" counterstamp that I see on so many of these. I don't know if that increases the value, or slightly diminishes it for Colonial collectors. As to values, others have pointed to some good info.
  • Thanks for the information everyone.

I have no acquaintance with this type of coin but I must say, that they appear to be the types that are near impossible to find in high grade, because they were crude and badly struck in the first place.

I'm happy that I can put them on Ebay without cringing too much at the prices he wants...
