My new nickel

I thought I might share a photo of my new purchase. I know some of you don't think too highly of modern day coin prices but I think this coin will only go up. I wanted to own at least one thing from PCGS in PR70 state. This was pretty much the only one I could afford. If the picture did not attach, I will try again.

    Nice coin, you would think that all new proof coins should be perfect, I mean the mint charge enough to buy the best equipments. I think that all none perfect proofs should be returned to the Mint for a refund. image

    Hey that's a great coin in a great grade. Glad to see somebody else around her likes Moderns too.
    I got one of those but it's a 97 model. 97 is the only Moderns I collect.

    I agree but look at the population report on 2003-S Jeffersons:

    PR69=3025

    PR70=64

    I know there are more and more PR70's each year but still the vast majority grade at PR69. Besides if all proofs graded the same, what fun would that be?

    Well as far as Jeffersons go, PCGS only uses the cameo designation for proofs. In regular MS coins they use MS and MSFS (Full Steps I presume). For 1997-P there are 22 MS69 coins and 3 MS70 coins. Keep in mind that there are many coins labeled MS70 that are in non PCGS holders and the population of those is probably a lot higher. PCGS slabs get more in MS70 and PR70 because they are rarer.

    given the discernible difference between most 69DCAM's and 70DCAM's, the premium for the 70 just isn't worth it to me. on average, a 69DCAM Jefferson for most years can be bought for $15-$25 while a 70DCAM will average $300-$700 depending on the year. from my experience, an extreme black-and-white PR69DCAM can be located with some diligent searching, if not already holdered, in a still intact proof setr for submission.

    Thank you, rlawsha. image

  • I wanted a PCGS PR 70 DCAM Jefferson too. I figured I wanted one as a souvenir even if it goes way down in value in the future. So I have one as part of my complete proof Jefferson set.

    DHRC was selling one on Ebay for $175 BIN. Is this the same coin? Seems cheap for a 70.

    I paid $195 from R & I Coins using the Buy It Now eBay option.
  • If you want a PR 70 DCAM Jeff 2003 is the date to buy. It is the cheapest date in that grade.

    rlawsha: Very pretty Jeff Nickel assuming that the reverse is as nice as the obverse -- which it should be for the grade image

    Thanks for sharing!

    .............and if you want a comparable coin in appearance for a mere fraction of the cost search for dates from 1979-1985. they seem to have the heaviest frost and hence, the best contrast.

    You are very right, you can buy a similar looking coin for a fraction of the price. What I was really paying for was the PR70DCAM stamp of approval from PCGS. My purchase was purely financially motivated. Let's look at that coin one or two years from now. I bet I double my money or come close to it. (I may have to eat my words.....)

  • Looks awesome, especially with the great photography. I think cameo tends to be one of those things that looks so much cooler in pictures than in hand. The black fields just look amazing in the picture with the cameo contrast! image
