Should I dip this coin?

I am serious with this question. This coin is graded "1955 Pr68 cam" by NGC. I would like to cross it to a PGCS slab, but have been told it would not cross with the toneing. The cameo is strong enough, but was told PCGS would only give it a 67 because they would not take a risk on the tone hidding something.

I was told to dip it for 2 to 3 seconds in EZ luster, rinse, dip in ammonia to neutralize and then rinse again.

Any thoughts?

Coin has a blue/purple tone to it. There is a small scratch on the plastic that shows above his ear. That is not on the coin.

It looks like the toning is light enough that it can be removed and still leave the surface in pristine condition. I'd skip the ammonia part though and just use water & acetone to rinse.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Will the acetone do the same thing as the ammonia?

  • PCGS price guide shows $450 for a 68 cam. I picked this up for $30 in an NGC slab. Now I know the price guide may be high, but even if its worth 30 to 40% of the price guide it would be a good cross. Also I can't put it in my registry set in the current slab.

Ammonia is an acid so dipping it in acid to neutralize an acid doesn't register with me. You should rinse it with water after dipping and then in acetone to remove the stuff the water left on it. Unless you use distilled water the water you use from your faucet has added chlorine, flouride, rust inhibitors and natural minerals which do not need to be left on your coin.

And this person that doesn't seem to have experience with dipping could ruin the coin and it could be worthless instead of more valuable. But I say go ahead and roll the dice and dip that sucker and go for the MONEY.

Hush up stman because he's dipping Modern stuff and not original bag toned Morgans like that other dealer did.

  • Thank you Dog97, I am not sure why he would tell me ammonia as a final dip.

stman - I do not wish to hurt the coin and I am not a dealer by any means. In fact I am not doing this to sell the coin, but to put it in my registry set. I just find it interesting that there would be such a big margin for a coin like this in a NGC slab vs a PCGS slab. If I can buy NGC slabs and cross them to PCGS it is sure a lot less expensive.

Oregon Collector, that dime is pretty............

I believe the toning is severe enough that if you remove it it will weaken the mirrors and kill any chance of a dcam coin.

PCGs really loves deep mirrors, a must for dcam coins.....

  • Just remember whe you dip it & have it re-graded, you might get a 66 instead of a 68. THe answer to the question is realy Do you like this coin toned. If yes skip the dip. If no, dip away, but absolutely no guarantee that it will upgrade, even if white. Downside is it might look like a plain ordinary blah coin w/o the toning - You probably ought to figure what your downside is if it a) doesn't upgrade, or b) goes down a grade or c) won't grade after the dip & strip.

You might consider diluting the EZ luster when you do the dip - you can always add a little more to get a higher strength. PASS on the ammonia - that may actually turn your coin grey, & after that no dip will ever make it better. Better to disolve a little baking soda in a cup of water so that after dipping you rinse it in the now slightly base solution to neutralizte the acid from the dip, then RINSE WELL with warm water, BLOT dry & maybe after that lightly blow dry so there's no moisture when you put it in the flip to send off for your upgrade.

BTW if you "blow dry" use the low setting & hold the coin securely - I once blew a coin right out of my hand onto the floor when I mistakenly turned it on high - the ding never came out! image

  • I don't think it would go dcam. Just hoping for cam. Are they as tough for cam vs dcam?

I am won't dip it if the consensus is no cross. It is a "pretty" dime just not white enough.image
  • Newmismatist - that is a good point. I suppose it is a gamble.

Has anyone tried to have a toned rosy graded at PCGS? Could it cross just like it is?

If it was a sure thing you wouldn't have gotten it so cheap!

Forgive me for interjecting, but if it were my coin, there's no way I'd dip it, or even crack it out of its respectable slab. You'd almost be guaranteeing yourself trouble with either move.

Why not buy another, already-graded PCGS PR-68Cam for your register set?
