Got a 2000s sac in change today. The first time I have every got a proof in change before and it appears to have seen some heavy use.

    S mint mark Saccie? lol
    Neat circ find.
Does it still have mirrored fields and frosty devices?
  • It doesn't have much of the frost left and about 70% of the fields are still mirrored but it looks like it has been riding in a pocket for awhile. Pretty dinged up, the dark area at the top obverse around "ERT" of Liberty is the reflection of the printing on the reveal light bulb lol.

  • I find the mention that the frost being gone a bit disturbing. I do not see flat areas of wear on the high points and I would expect those areas to be noticable if it had had enough circulation to remove almost all of the frost. Is there any chance that this is not a proof but rather a prooflike business strike? I know officially there are no 2000-S business strikes, but during the testing phase the mint DID do test production runs using business strike dies dated 2000-S. Supposedly these were all destroyed, but what if?

Wow, wow, wow....what if? What if? How can we find out?
  • Other then all the "marks" on it it doesn't look to have any wear. Just very little frost and the mirrors are all patchy.

You should submit it to somebody. I can't wait to hear the results. Good luck!
  • No wear but no frost either, mirrors described as patchy. I've found proofs in circulation before with definite wear and the mirrors, although badly hairlined and scuffed, were still clearly present over the whole coin. (The frost was still evident except in the worn areas as well.) The more this coin is described, the more it sounds to me like a business strike. This coin needs to be seen in person by some others as well.

Very interesting! It would be great to see the coin in hand.

Cull proofs can be extremely difficult to sell and are often placed in circulation. This
does appear that it might go beyond a mere cull though.

  • If it does turn out to be one of the production testing strikes I want a credit in the news story for being the one who pointed out what it was. image

THis is to cool. If it is a business strike just how much would you expect it to be worth? Best guess anyway

  • I bet it would bring several hundred dollars.

The plot thickens then. Could this be a Trial business strke with the non-business strike "S" mnt mark?
Or a Trial Proof strike or Culled Proof strike, OR Could it be a circulated, culled Proof...
Stay tuned to this station as the drama unfolds, on...As the Coin Turns...

I think it would bring a lot more than that. I would see a business strike 2000-S dollar as being the equivilant of a 1974 aluminum cent except that this one would be legal to own. I would guess at least a couple thousand. In fact if it is a business strike I'll open the bid at $1,000 right now.
