This has always been one of my favorite coins. Luiz Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duke of Caxias, was an early Brazilian military hero and close ally of Emperor Pedro II. This coin was part of a series celebrating famous Brazilians issued by the government of Getulio Vargas, who unfortunately became a dictator and replaced all the portraits with his own.
