Why do NASCAR cards do so poorly on ebay?

I came across about 500 2002 and 2003 NASCAR cards as part of a collection purchase. Race used, singles, and inserts. My ebay auction results were horrible! The few lots that sold went for 10-15% book.

I am a powerseller with over 1000+ (no negs), so it wasn't my feedback. Anyone else notice this? I have about half the lot left and I'm thinking about dumping them to a local dealer to avoid the hassle.

  • Because most NASCAR fans would rather spend the extra dollars they get on beer and chewing tobacco?

Typical run-of-the-mill baseball stuff doesn't do much better. No one grew up collecting racing cards, so I don't think there is much strength of habit or tradition in that sector. Not yet, anyway.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

I don't know the name of the track outside Vegas on the highway leading towards Area 51 but when we were driving by the track you would have thought The Beatles,Jimi Hendrix and The Doors were in town. The parking lot was full and every seat all the way up to the nosebleed section was filled.Plus the night before all you saw in and out of the casinos were people with NASCAR fan gear.

I have a friend who works for one of the drivers in NASCAR and the people. He says that autographs and car parts are what the fans collect.

Told me once that the shell of Jeff Gordon's entire race car was once ripped off before a race.

Maybe you should find a way to sell at or close by a racing event?
  • fact is that NASCAR is HUGE and has
millions of new fans every year
    that collectively spend Billions on
    "stuff" that supports their driver,
    (dale, dale jr., jeff gordon)
or their car (ford, chevy, dodge, etc)
or their sponsors (tide, pepsi, etc)
    but
they really do not do cards yet.
    Like helionaut pointed out,
"No one grew up collecting racing cards"

the collectibles they tend to buy are
diecast model cars and things like that.

When I was in college, our apartment coffee table was made up of two pieces. A slab of plywood, and my roommate's used Mark Martin tire from the 1993 Pocono 500. It was his prized possession and he wanted everyone that came over to see it. My other roommate was from NYC, and he cringed every time he walked in the living room.

If cards ever do catch on, I don't know of any more loyal and rabid fans than NASCAR.

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
  • Have you considered offering the cards for sale to shops in strong NASCAR areas? That would be my best guess.
