How to get state quarters in quantity

I was thinking of ordering a $250 bag of the Michigan state quarters (Go Michigan!) but the $50 premium is putting me off.

Anyone know of a way to get a large bag of these quarters without paying too high a premium?
BTW, every teller at every branch of my bank is completely unhelpful with any requests for any type of coin so that's out.
(it's like pulling teeth getting golden dollars up here)

Any help?

  • Coin shows. The last shows I've been to there's always someone that specializes in moderns, proofs, mint sets, etc. and they usually have mint sewn bags for a small percentage over face.

Clue me in: how do dealers get to be able to sell mint-sewn bags at a little over face when we mere mortals have to spend the $50 or so premium. Are they buying so many that they are getting them at face? Are we talking about Costco price markups here? Is this a loss leader? HUH?

Coins are no longer bagged for normal distribution. All coins now are shipped in jumbo
bags which are equivalent to the old pallets of bags. The bags are handled by machinery
and emptied in a frame structure through a "spout" in the bottom of the bag. Most of
these are shipped directly to large regional banks or to counting houses like Brinks where
they are broken down into smaller lots for distribution to smaller banks and retailers. The
standard unit that seems to have developed for smaller amounts of quarters is the box
which contains $500 or 2,000 coins. If you can't locate or don't desire a bag your best bet
is to contact a different bank or a larger office of your current bank. Ask to speak to the
    vault manager.

Some advertisers will sell large quantities of current coin relatively cheaply (check CW) but
there will be a small mark-up and huge shipping costs. There will also be a low likelyhood
of finding btter coins in these lots since they will usually be pre-screened.

It's really been getting tougher and tougher to get new coin since 1965. It's not so much
that they are trying to discourage it as it is that when people quit asking for new coin the
mechanisms to provide them have become obsolete.

The trick is not acquiring the quarters, but rather getting them to you. I can get $250 of Michigan quarters at face no problem, but shipping to Michigan would probably cost as much or more as what the Mint is charging.
  • After continuously trying to get state quarters at MY bank, I finally found a bank wayyy 'down the road' that always has them - no problem, and I don't even bank there. Just call around and find out who has them.

I finally got disgusted at MY bank, because I found out that THEY are the ones that supply the OTHER smaller banks around here. So I called the main office, and talked to whoever would listen, and told them my woes - I have banked here since 'blah blah' time, and I have to go "blah blah" place to get quarters. I heard everyone gets quarters from you, and I want to know why I can NOT get them from you also!

They kept sending me to somebody else because nobody really cared about a pion like me and my complaint. After talking with several people, I found out when, and why and HOW I could get the quarters from MY bank.

I am going to try it today, and will let you know how it comes out. They said to call the MAIN office and put a reserve in for how many I wanted. Of course, I really don't want a whole bag, so don't know how that would work out.

    good luck.
  • Call your bank & ask them! That's how I got all my rolled state quarters. Face value too!
