Hey Folks..just found my first mint error!

I was actually looking for a different error that I suspect is on a 2000 quarter, but when I pulled out some boxes of unc sets that I hadn't opened yet, I found a Philly set that has 2 N.H. quarters! It has one N.H. in the proper place, and another where the MD. should be! Checked thru all my other sets immediately (about 15 total) - no other set has the mistake. Pretty neat - but how do you get something like this verified - or is it even necessary? I don't think that PCGS grades entire unc sets..but maybe they could verify a mistake such as this, if I sent the entire set of 5 quarters? I guess I'll call them tomorrow - any other ideas, or has anybody else seen this?image

It's a packaging error, not a coin error. You can probably sell it a some premium on e-bay.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Yeah - I thought about it, and some person had to make a handling mistake, obviously. But since it happened at the mint, isn't it a "mint error" , even though it's not a "minting error". The actual error I'm searching for is NH-P with no mint mark. I have found 2 of these in circulation, and opened some mini-bags and found some with very weak "P" strikes, but haven't found any truly 'uncirculated' (to refer to an earlier thread) coins that have the same total lack of mintmark as those I pulled from change. PCGS referred me to an error specialist in Long Beach (Goldstein or Goldberg I believe)..I'll have to give him a call and see what he thinks, since PCGS only grades mint errors if the coin is unc.

  • One of my buddies I work with ordered a 2001 Mint set from the mint in 2001.(duh).All coins are present, but added bonus was a Sac in same place as Kennedy. Two coins in same hole. Was still sealed but plastic was wrinkled.I told him the mint's just trying to get rid of the darn things.image
  • And here I hadn't been this excited since I found a Kennedy half with heads on both sides as a teenager - took it to the local dealer and he explained "skimming" to me and showed the tail-tell signs on the coin. I'm gonna keep pluggin' at those NH-P quarters, though!

That's a cool find. PCGS can't do anything for you because they don't do sets but no verification is needed anyway. It's a mint error all right but packaging errors don't bring much prem. Any prem would be in keeping the set intact because once you remove the coins from the original packaging you will no longer have a packaging error.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
