New Guy Questions

I've been reading this board for weeks now! Finally got my log-on idea... Two starter questions for you fine people:
1) When I was a preteen (found girls and forgot what a coin was) I collected and used Littleton to build something of a starter collection. I recently signed back up for their 'approval service' and I'm finding that their prices are WAY off mark with the prices I find on the PGCS pricing guide online. Naturally I return what seems ridiculious to pay for and keep what seems reasonable. Does anyone have experiece with them that is good? bad? OR is it just what it is - coin collecting for the beginner?
2) How do you get those images / icons that go with your name saved with your name / profile? I can't find it in the help topics anywhere.
Have enjoyed reading all of you - some real education going on here for a born again collector!

Littleton is not such a good source for coins and the PCGS price guide is not a good source for pricing.
Under the [profile] button is a place to configure your icon. You have to pick from one that is there and can only upload one on the 15th of the month.

The PCGS price guide is inflated to begin with. That should give you an idea just how stupid Littleton's pricing structure is. They are definitely not your best option for purchasing coins.
And, welcome to the forum. You will find that I am the sweetest, most gentle member here, always considerate of the feelings of others and approaching all with a high degree of empathy and compassion.

Second of all, as to your first question:

Number one: girls are BETTER than coins. Better I tell you! If I had to choose between girls and coins, I would choose....um....GIRLS! Furthermore, all pricing guides are useless in the volatile market of coins which we are now experiencing. Throw all of your pricing guides away. Any single pricing guide is inevitably reliant on too small a sample. The PCGS pricing guide is particularly inadequate.
How do you get those images / icons that go with your name saved with your name / profile? I can't find it in the help topics anywhere.
Click on the "Profile" tab in the upper right hand menu. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find a selection called "Select the author icon you wish to use". Click on "View All". It will take several minutes for all the images to load up, unless you have a dialup connection, in which case it may take half an hour. Select which image you want as your icon. When you return to the prior dialogue box, click on "Update Profile". This will add your selected icon to your name.

I have no personal experience with Littleton, but I think the consensus here is that their prices are very high. As Russ said, the PCGS price guide is high also, and in any event it's inaccurate to compare the PCGS prices to raw coins.
What do you collect? Maybe someone here can refer you towards a dealer. Do you have the chance to attend coin shows?
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Russ took his pills today.

Take note of how cynical these others are, and the way they make fun of us genteel souls.

I . . . used Littleton
May want to rephrase who was getting used in the collector-Littleton relationship.
I'd turn to this guy for remuneration:
Did I mention I hate Littleton, NTC and the Franklin Mint?
One of the most useful things on this Forum is the search feature which allows you to find old threads on some questions you may have. For example, run "Littleton,"to see what has been said in the past.
As to pricing, there are lots of places to look. Some of the most experienced people here say to look to auction prices completed on the Heritage site and on EBay. Also, compare, Coin Values from Coin World, PCGS coin prices here, Coin Dealer Newsletter (you can get a good starfter package from their website on line), other websites with coin values, Redbook and other sources like a couple of monthly magazines-- some of these are a bit pie-in-the-sky high, but, as you get some experience in the coins that interest you, it will all become more apparent to you. The thing is, this current market is pretty active and most pricing info leaves something to be desired. Shop, shop, shop and read, read, read -- then go to a bunch of coin shows and see what you can do. Prices aren't written in stone. Try a little horsetrading at shows to see how that works. There is no one source of the truth.
